  1. _____________ Electromagnets: 6 mini investigations Have books open to page 628 for some readings

  2. Task: Use the equipment in your box to build an electromagnet.

  3. Good job everyone.

  4. One wire tucked in permanently. Other touches on/off. Wire wound evenly from top to bottom

  5. Task 1: Find the strongest part of the electromagnet.

  6. Electromagnets • The strongest part of an electromagnet is… • at the ends, just like on a bar magnet. Read p. ___ ¶ __ together

  7. Task 2: Disconnect the current.

  8. Electromagnets • Disconnecting the electricity causes… • it to lose itsmagnetism.

  9. Task 3: Wind the wire 10x more.

  10. Electromagnets • Winding the wire 10 more times causes… • the magnetism to become stronger.

  11. Task 4: Reverse the current.

  12. Electromagnets • When the 1.5 volt current is reversed… • nothing changes (that we can see).

  13. Task 5: Remove the nail.

  14. Electromagnets • Removing the iron core (nail) causes… • it to lose (most of) itsmagnetism.

  15. Task 6: Double the current.

  16. Electromagnets • Doubling the electricity causes… • the magnet to become stronger.

  17. Try to pick up the car!

  18. Clean up • Straighten the wire • Reduce residual charge in nail by dropping it down GENTLY on hard floor • Put all the parts back in your bin and return it to my desk

  19. Uses of Magnets • Read pp.628 – 631 in your Physical Science textbook. • Read about some of the uses of electromagnets. • Generators and Motors • Transformers

  20. Uses of Magnets • Your group will investigate a use for magnets and share with the class on the big whiteboards. • Include a picture and an explanation!
