  1. Games Design Elements In this lesson we are going to explore Games Design Elements and use what we will learn to start designing our own game.

  2. Games Design Elements The areas which the Games Designers have to consider when designing a game.

  3. Games Design Elements Narrative design Character design Level / environment design Gameplay and game mechanics design User interface design

  4. Narrative The Story behind the game. Is there someone to save? Somewhere to escape from?

  5. Character Design • When we think of character design we think of the following things: • Main character / sidekick/ villain / shop owner (sprite) • Objects the player interacts with • ( for example the mushrooms from super mario!) • Players / Actors / avatars • ( xbox connect with augmented reality • or Miis in Wii console games, • LA Noir uses real actors first then • characters are developed)

  6. Level / Environment Design • The level and the environment not only sets the scene for the player it can also set challenges. • Things to consider: • Background, Lighting, weather, map, props etc.

  7. Game Play and Game Mechanics How the game works. Things to consider are: Types of challenges, activities, rewards, progression, game rules, skill, chance.

  8. User Interface Design • Design elements such as: • Control (input) devices • Output devices • Viewpoint • Heads up Display (HUD)

  9. Your Task Look at three games of your choice and tell me a little about: Narrative design Character design Level / environment design Gameplay and game mechanics design User interface design
