  2. 1935- Kodachrome color slide film developed 1947-Edwin H. Land announces his invention of the Polaroid Camera, which can develop an image inside the camera in one minute. The first Polaroid Camera was sold to the public in 1948. 1956- Video tape recorders convert television images into digital data. 1957-the first digital image was produced on a computer. Russell Kirsch for the United States National Bureau of Standards created a rotating drum that allowed images to be scanned. Using this device, he scanned a 5 centimeter by 5 centimeter shot of his son into the computer. 1959- – Nikon F introduced 1963-Kodak introduces the instamatic camera 1969- George Smith and Willard Boyle invents the CCD.***The CCD is the image sensor which is the heart of all digital cameras.** 1972- Texas Instruments patented the first electronic camera that did not require film 1981-Sony introduces first commercial electronic camera (still video camera) called the Mavica, did not require film, and was based off a charged coupled device. 1985-: Minolta markets the world's first autofocus SLR system (called "Maxxum" in the US) 1986- Kodak created the first sensor that could detect megapixels 1986-Fuji introduces the Quicksnap, a disposable camera. 1986- Nikon created a prototype for an analog electronic SLR camera. The Fuji DS-1P was released in 1988 and was the first device to digitally store images. From this point on, digital photography technology exploded. 1989: Adobe strikes a deal to license what becomes known as Photoshop. They begin 10 months of product development. 1990-1991-Kodak released the Kodak Professional Digital Camera System, a device aimed at photojournalists looking to quickly get their photos back to the reporting room. Considered the first DSLR, this device started the digital camera revolution. The camera featured 1.3 pixels and was a Nikon F-3 body with Kodak pieces. 1994-First Consumer digital camera available, Apple Quicktake 100 2004- Kodak announced they will no longer manufacture film cameras Timeline

  3. 1981,Sony Mavica (Magnetic Video Camera) *Images were recorded onto a mini disc and then put into a video reader that was connected to a television monitor or color printer. *It was a video camera that took video freeze-frames. **Started the digital camera revolution, but not considered a true digital camera.   5. 1994- 1st digital camera available for the consumer-level market released as an easy-to-use digital camera that connected to any Macintosh computer by way of an Apple serial cable. The camera was capable of storing eight photos at 640x480 resolution, 32 photos at 320x240 resolution, or a mixture of both sizes.   6. Stands for Charged Coupled Device. • Chip used to record image information. Light hits the CCD when a photo is taken, and then the analog CCD converts the information to digital. This is one of the two main recording devices used in digital cameras. The other is CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor) • An image sensor's photo-capturing power is measured in pixels, and will usually be seen expressed in megapixels. • Turns patterns of light, color, and intensity into useful information • Used in cameras, fax machines, scanners, copiers, and High definition televisions CCD (aka Image sensor)

  7. 1986- Kodak invents world’s first megapixel sensor for a camera designed for scientific and industrial imaging applications • 1.4 megapixels • Could produce a 5 x 7 digital photo-quality print • The camera featured a solid-state full-frame imager containing 1320 H x 1335 V light-sensitive pixels. MSRP varied from $10,000 to 40,000, depending on sensor quality First Megapixel Sensor

  8. One megapixel equals one million pixels. The rating for a digital camera’s resolution. The higher the megapixel rating, the higher the resolution of images created by the image. A measure of resolution that reflects the ability of a digital camera to record detail. The more megapixels a camera has the more detail its images can contain and the more they can be enlarged without losing clarity. What is a megapixel?

  9. The number of pixels used to capture an image. Resolution ranges from low (640 x 480) to high (2592 x 1944 and up). High resolution makes for sharper pictures; however, high-resolution photos take up more memory than lower-res photos. Different levels of resolution are appropriate for different purposes; see chart for a few suggestions. Resoultion
