  2. DROUGHT

  3. “The drought that has settled over more than half of the continental United States this summer is the most widespread in more than half a century. And it is likely to grow worse.” -New York Times, July 19, 2012

  4. Drought = Presence of heat But more, Drought = Absence of water No Water = Drought = Death Water = Life

  5. Drought a reality in the Old Testament. It is the sometimes the judgment of God. But it is something more…

  6. Jeremiah 14 1 This is the word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah concerning the drought: 2 “Judah mourns,     her cities languish;they wail for the land,    and a cry goes up from Jerusalem.3 The nobles send their servants for water;    they go to the cisterns    but find no water. They return with their jars unfilled;    dismayed and despairing,    they cover their heads. 4 The ground is cracked    because there is no rain in the land…

  7. In the Bible, often the physical stands for the spiritual; the physical reality points to and is a powerful picture of the spiritual reality.

  9. Jeremiah 14 7 Although our sins testify against us,    do something, Lord, for the sake of your name. For we have often rebelled;     we have sinned against you.8 You who are the hope of Israel,    its Savior in times of distress,

  10. Jeremiah 2:11-13 But my people have exchanged their glorious God    for worthless idols.12 Be appalled at this, you heavens,    and shudder with great horror,”declares the Lord.13 “My people have committed two sins:They have forsaken me,    the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns,    broken cisterns that cannot hold water…

  11. THIRST(LONGING)

  12. Psalm 63 A psalm of David. When he was in the Desert of Judah. 1 You, God, are my God,    earnestly I seek you;I thirst for you,     my whole being longs for you,in a dry and parched land    where there is no water…

  13. Psalm 42 1 As the deer pants for streams of water,     so my soul pants for you, my God.2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.     When can I go and meet with God?

  14. The inner spiritual reality: We are drought stricken, we are dying of thirst. Can we admit it?

  15. WATER

  16. Isaiah 55 1 “Come, all you who are thirsty,     come to the waters; and you who have no money,    come, buy and eat! … 3 Give ear and come to me;    listen, that you may live. I will make an everlasting covenant with you,    my faithful love promised to David.

  17. Isaiah 35 5 Then will the eyes of the blind be opened     and the ears of the deaf unstopped.6 Then will the lame leap like a deer,     and the mute tongue shout for joy. Water will gush forth in the wilderness    and streams in the desert.

  18. John 4 10 Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.” 11 “Sir,” the woman said, “you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? 12 Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his livestock?” 13 Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

  19. LIFE

  20. John 7 37 On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink.38 Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.”

  21. Isaiah 12 11 The Lord will guide you always;    he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land     and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden,     like a spring whose waters never fail.12 Your people will rebuild the ancient ruins     and will raise up the age-old foundations; you will be called Repairer of Broken Walls,     Restorer of Streets with Dwellings.
