  2. The Context • Jesus is on His way to Jerusalem. • Luke 13:22 And He went through the cities and villages, teaching, and journeying toward Jerusalem. • Multitudes followed Him. • Luke 14:25a Now great multitudes went with Him. …

The Context • Tax collectors and sinners were coming to Him. • Luke 15:1 Then all the tax collectors and the sinners drew near to Him to hear Him. • Pharisees and scribes were complaining about it. • Luke 15:2 And the Pharisees and scribes complained, saying, “This Man receives sinners and eats with them.” cf. Luke 18:9-14

  4. The Context • Jesus’ response: • The parable of the lost sheep. 15:3-7 • The parable of the lost coin. 15:8-10 • The parable of the lost (prodigal) son. 15:11-32

  5. Some observations: The son was born a son.

The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself. Romans 2:4 Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance? 2 Corinthians 7:8-11 Acts 17:30 Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent,

God receives the penitent. 2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. Luke 15:10 Likewise, I say to you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.” 1 John 1:7-9 Hebrews 8:11-12
