  1. Adventures in Cohesion and Surface Tension Physical Science, Chemistry Activity Instructor: Dianne Phillips Team Members: Cassie Despain Jordan Buettemeyer Nimesh Modi

  2. Introduction Students in the Summer 2009 Physical Science class, at Northwest Arkansas Community College, worked together to discover chemistry activities dealing with surface tension and cohesion.

  3. Project overview • Future Physical Science students need a lab manual to facilitate activities and to enhance learning experiences. • Our contribution to the lab manual will include an activity that demonstrates surface tension and cohesion and allows students to experience and discover this concept in a hands-on way. • The lab manual will be shared with future K-12 teachers.

  4. PROJECT OBJECTIVES • Publish lab manual for future Physical Science students. • Develop activities to maximize learning about surface tension and cohesion. • To provide a hands-on experience in learning these concepts.

  5. Community • NorthWest Arkansas Community College: • Physical Science class • Elementary and Secondary Education majors • Area Public Schools: Future Teachers, taking Physical Science, will have a collection of hands-on activities to use with their future students.

  6. Curriculum • Chemistry concepts: • surface tension: cohesion of water, where water is attracted to itself. • cohesion - when water is attracted to itself • adhesion – when water is attracted to other liquids • Hydrophilic (water loving) and hydrophobic (water hating)

  7. Technology • Microsoft Office: Power Point, Word • Digital camera • Internet

  8. Developed skills • Communication • Collaboration • Technology • Time management and organization

  9. Methodology • Research possible concepts and experiments. • Select activity the is simple enough for K-12 students, yet appropriate for a college level physical science classroom . • Create and refine experiment. • Construct power point to present information.

  10. Expected outcome • Video • Power point • Pictures • Experiment • Contribution to lab manual

  11. References • Video of Experiment • Dr. Bill Durham (chemistry professor at the University of Arkansas) • Dianne Phillips (EAST Facilitator)
