Structure Type StudyObjective • Select the best Structure Alternative • The study must provide ODOT with all the project constraints, background, facts and insights to support the preferred structure alternative selection. • More upfront preliminary engineering and project team involvement to better assist the design decision making process. • Documentation of the reasoning behind project related decisions

  9. Structure Type StudyWhen Required • Required in the Preferred Alternative Verification review submission for a Major Project (Step 7) • Required in the Minor Project Preliminary Engineering Study review submission (Step 3) • Not required for projects classified as Minimal

  16. 201.2 STRUCTURE TYPE STUDY SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS • Minimum Requirements for Submission • Based on the complexity of the project some work in Step 8 may be pertinent to perform in Step 7 • Example – A project in an highly urban, high traffic setting may require more in-depth development of the Maintenance of Traffic to ensure it’s feasibility and cost

  17. 201.2 STRUCTURE TYPE STUDY SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS • Profile for each bridge alternative Section 201.2.1 • Main characters are the existing and proposed profiles, ground line, water elevations and outline of structure • Profile is an abbreviated version, items not required footing, bedrock, top of slope elevations, etc. • Horizontal and Vertical Clearances need to be shown

  18. 201.2 STRUCTURE TYPE STUDY SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS • Profile for each bridge alternative Section 201.2.1 • Preliminary Structure Site Plan Section 201.2.2 • Site Plan with Plan and Profile view required for preferred alternative only • Plan view of existing and proposed, contours, utilities, hydraulic & traffic data, proposed and existing structure blocks. • Window dressing not required for example guardrail stationing, treatment of slopes, etc. (BDM 202.2.1)

Life Cycle Analysis • FHWA Executive Order – “…consider the use of life cycle cost…” • Initial cost (replacement cost) • Cost accrued by traveling public due to delays/detours (rehabilitation v. replacement) • Maintenance costs of various structure types • from year 1 to year 39 (0% @ year 1 to 2% @ year 39 of replacement cost, repeat at year 41after major rehabilitation) Uniform Gradient • Future major rehabilitation – coatings (sealers, painting), deck replacement • At year 40 new deck
