  2. D ENG M.3 Sem. 1 Passage 1 I Reading & Writing G There are many ways of communicating without using speech. Signals, signs, symbols, and gestures may be found in every known culture. The basic function of a signal is to impinge upon the environment in such a way that it attracts attention, as, for example, the dots and dashes of a telegraph circuit. Coded to refer to speech, the potential for communication is very great. While less adaptable to the codification of words, signs contain greater meaning in and of themselves. <next> I T A L 4.0

  3. D ENG M.3 Sem. 1 Passage 1 I Reading & Writing G A stop sign or a barber pole conveys meaning quickly and conveniently. Symbols are more difficult to describe than either signals or signs because of their intricate relationship with the receiver’s cultural perceptions. In some cultures, applauding in a theater provides performers with an auditory symbol of approval. Gestures such as waving and handshaking also communicate certain cultural messages. I T A L 4.0

  6. D ENG M.3 Sem. 1 Passage 1 I Reading & Writing G 5. It may be concluded from this passage that ________. a. symbols are very easy to define and interpret b. only some cultures have signals, signs, and symbols c. waving and handshaking are not related to culture d. signals, signs, symbols, and gestures are forms of communication I T A L 4.0

  7. D ENG M.3 Sem. 1 Passage 2 I Reading & Writing G Recent technological advances in manned and unmanned undersea vehicles have overcome some of the limitations of divers and diving equipment. Without a vehicle, divers often became sluggish and their mental concentration became limited. Because of undersea pressure which affected their speech organs, communication among divers was difficult or impossible. I T A L 4.0

  8. D ENG M.3 Sem. 1 Passage 2 I Reading & Writing G But today, most oceanographers make observations by means of instruments which are lowered into the ocean or from samples taken from the water. Direct observations of the ocean floor are made not only by divers but also by deep-diving submarines. Some of these submarines can dive to depthsof more than seven miles and cruise at depths of fifteen thousand feet. I T A L 4.0

  9. D ENG M.3 Sem. 1 Passage 2 I Reading & Writing G Radio equipped buoys can be operated by remote control in order to transmit information back to land-based laboratories, including data about water temperature, currents, and weather. I T A L 4.0

  10. D ENG M.3 Sem. 1 Passage 2 I Reading & Writing G 1. What is the main topic of the passage? a. undersea vehicles b. direct observation of the ocean floor c. communication among divers d. technological advances in oceanography I T A L 4.0

  11. D ENG M.3 Sem. 1 Passage 2 I Reading & Writing G 2. The word sluggish is closest in meaning to ________ a. nervous b. confused c. slow moving d. very weak I T A L 4.0

  12. D ENG M.3 Sem. 1 Passage 2 I Reading & Writing G 3. Divers have had problems in communicating underwater because _____ a. they did not pronounce clearly b. the water destroyed their speech organs c. the pressure affected their speech organs d. the vehicles they used have not been perfected I T A L 4.0

  13. D ENG M.3 Sem. 1 Passage 2 I Reading & Writing G 4. This passage suggests that the successful exploration of the ocean depends upon __________ a. vehicles as well as divers b. the limitations of diving equipment c. controlling currents and the water d. radios that divers use to communicate I T A L 4.0

  14. D ENG M.3 Sem. 1 Passage 2 I Reading & Writing G 5. Which of the following is true about undersea vehicles? a. They are very slow to respond b. They are too small for a man to fit inside c. They have the same limitations that divers have d. They make direct observations of the ocean floor I T A L 4.0

  15. D ENG M.3 Sem. 1 Passage 3 I Reading & Writing G Having no language, infants cannot be told what they need to learn. Yet by the age of three they will have mastered the basic structure of their native language and will be well on their way to communicative competence. Acquiring their language is a most impressive intellectual feat. Students of how children learn language generally agree that the most remarkable aspect of this feat is the rapid acquisition of grammar. I T A L 4.0

  16. D ENG M.3 Sem. 1 Passage 3 I Reading & Writing G Nevertheless, the ability of children to conform to grammatical rules is only slightly more wonderful than their ability to learn words. It has been reckoned that the average high school graduate in the United States has a reading vocabulary of 80,000 words, which includes idiomatic expressions and proper names of people and places. This vocabulary must have been learned over a period of 16 years. I T A L 4.0

  17. D ENG M.3 Sem. 1 Passage 3 I Reading & Writing G From the figures, it can be calculated that the average child learns at a rate of about 13 new words a day. Clearly a learning process of great complexity goes on at a rapid rate in children. I T A L 4.0

  18. D ENG M.3 Sem. 1 Passage 3 I Reading & Writing G 1. What is the main subject of the passage? a. How to memorize words b. Language acquisition in children c. Communicating with infants d. Teaching languages to children I T A L 4.0

  23. D ENG M.3 Sem. 1 Passage 4 I Reading & Writing G The three phases of the human memory are the sensory memory, the short-term memory, and the long-term memory. This division of the memory into phases is an image or memory that enters your mind fleetingly; it comes and goes in under a second. The memory does will not last longer than that unless the information enters the short-term memory. I T A L 4.0

  24. D ENG M.3 Sem. 1 Passage 4 I Reading & Writing G Information can be held in the short-term memory for about twenty seconds or as long as you are actively using it. If you repeat a fact to yourself, the fact will stay in your short-term memory as long as you keep repeating it. Once you stop repeating it, either it is forgotten or moves into long-term memory when you actively try to put it there through memorization or when an idea or image enters your mind on its own. I T A L 4.0

  25. D ENG M.3 Sem. 1 Passage 4 I Reading & Writing G 1. The best title for this passage would be ______ a. How long it takes to memorize b. How to classify the stages of human memory c.
