Road Safety – Why we care After this sessionyou should: • FEEL • It is Personal, about me, my family and colleagues • That I can make a difference. • KNOW • Road Safety is a key risk area for Shell and for all of us • Road Safety is not just about driving, it is about all of us who share the road. • Following the Life Saving Rules has saved lives • DO • We will identify the simple things that can massively reduce risk on the road. • You and I will commit to keeping ourselves, our family, friends and colleagues safe on the road.

  3. Road Safety matters 1.2 million people die on the world’s roads every year and 50 million are injured. Road Transport incidents account for 1 in 50 deaths globally each year. For young people (aged 10-24 years), road traffic injuries are the leading cause of death. Around 3000 people die every day, and 20% are children! Road traffic related deaths and injuries are unacceptably high

  4. Shell business context SINCE INTRODUCING THE LIFE-SAVING RULES IN 2009, • But…. we still have road transport incidents and even one injury is too many! • We still have many violations reported. FATAL INCIDENTS INVOLVING ROAD TRANSPORT AT SHELL HAVE REDUCED BY 90% Do you know what these Life-Saving Rule symbols mean? This means at least 150 lives saved on the road Driving and road transport is still the largest fatality risk for Shell

  5. Why We care The statistics are not just “numbers”, they are people: Drivers, Passengers, Pedestrians, Children, Mothers, Fathers, Friends and Colleagues. Do you know someone who has been injured on the road?

  6. Road Safety – It’s about behaviour Most incidents are not caused by the vehicle. The cause is usually people’s behavior

  7. Why do people take risks on the road? • Why do people put themselves at risk on the road? Different reasons for taking risks need different solutions to help people stay safe.

Why do people take riskSon the road? • Why do people put themselves at risk? • Unintended: People make mistakes, or do not recognize the risk e.g. Fatigue or hands-free phone. • Situational: People don’t have what they need to be safe e.g. No seat belt in the car, no sidewalk or crossing, etc. • People ignore the risk, or display risk tolerance: people ignore the risk of crossing a busy road, use inappropriate speed near a school, narrow road, snow… • Optimising: To please someone else e.g. by getting there quicker regardless of driving behaviour; using a phone to quickly respond. • Pressure: Wanting the journey to be over faster e.g. already late, taking an unsafe route, speeding • Routine: Others do it that way or accept it. • Reckless: risk taking for fun, under the influence of alcohol or drugs. • Different reasons for taking risks need different solutions to help people stay safe. • At work and at home we can influence the choices people make to be safe on the road. What can you do?

  9. Simple things you can do to be safe Wearing seatbelts can reduce the risk of fatality up to 60% in a vehicle collision. Embrace Life Video How do you show you care?   10. Keeping us all safe on the road What can I do to keep my family, friends and colleagues safe on the road? What will you say to them? What will you do for them? How will they know that you care? • Who will share some suggested approaches to intervene or coaching?
