  2. What is EndNote? • A software tool for publishing and managing bibliographies • Create your own database of citations, bibliographies and figure lists for papers and other publications • Campus licensed version: X2

What we will learn today • Creating bibliographies and citations • Entering references into an EndNote library • Searching Remote e-databases • Importing references into EndNote • Searching an EndNote library and printing directly from EndNote • Using EndNote while writing a paper with Microsoft Word (Cite While You Write)

  4. Starting EndNote X2 • EndNote X2 is available from the Network Teaching Software • Select “Overwrite” to overwrite a previously installed version of Network Teaching Software

  5. Create an EndNote library • An EndNote library is a collection of references • Create an EndNote library to store all your references. • Use the extension “.enl” (EndNote Library) References EndNote Library Author Title Publisher Year

  6. Demo:Search and input references intoEndNote Library 1. Create a new EndNote Library Name it library.enl 2. Search EdCAT Keyword search: special education 3. In your EndNote library (library.enl) Click References --> New Reference

  7. 4. Remember to set Reference Type = book 5. Input the first two records (from EdCAT) into your EndNote Library library.enl

  8. Author Format • Enter last name, followed by a comma, first name (or first initial followed by a period), and middle initial followed by a period. • Each author name must be separated by a semi-colon. • Example: Smith,J. R.;Jones,Robert K.;Adams,Mary

  9. Connect to EdCAT and search TASK: Search Library Catalogue from EndNote and Copy references your EndNote Library (library.enl) Follow the steps… From EndNote: • Tools  Online Search... • Highlight Hong Kong Inst of Educ • Click the “Choose” button

  10. 4. Search special needsin Title attribute 5. Retrieve references 1 to 10 (out of 113) 6. The 10 references are copied to your EndNote Library (library.enl) 7. References can be highlighted. Right-click to “Hide Selected References” or “Show Selected References”. Other options also available.

  14. Restriction of using EndNote • Only English character searching in EndNote will return results. However, search result numbers do not match. • Traditional/ Simplified Chinese searching do not work properly • Bug! Applies to all EndNote versions

  15. Use EndNote with your preferred settings / Sort references 1. Set preferences (demo) For example, you can preset your own EndNote Library to be opened every time you start EndNote; font styles, default reference type and formatting. 2. Sort and arranging references (demo)

  16. Search references in EndNote Library • You can locate specific references or groups of references via Search References command (Tools --> Search Library...) • This search function is very useful when your EndNote Library grows larger

  17. Attachments • You can attach files associated with the bibliographic information stored in EndNote (References --> File Attachements...) • BMP, TIFF, JPEG, PNG, GIF • PDF • Excel • Powerpoint • Equation • Chemical structure • Technical drawing, etc.

Connect to other library catalogue e.g., Connect to Hokkaido University of Education library catalogue: • Tools Connect  Connect • Choose Hokkaido U from the list • Click the “Connect” button • Search Classroom interactions in Any Field (Notice the double-byte characters) • Copy first 5 references to existing EndNote Library

Connect to Academic Search Premier (Ebscohost) • Tools Connect  Connect • Choose Acad Search Prem (EBSCO) • Click the “Connect” button • Enter User ID and Password (refer to http://www.lib.ied.edu.hk/research/endnote/endnote.html) • Search Classroom interactions and Primary in Any Field • Copy first 5 references (out of 1221) to existing EndNote Library

  23. EndNote Ribbon • Problems with EndNote in Word 2007 • Close Word • Click the Teaching software icon containing EndNote X2 • Scroll down to EndNote X2. But before clicking on it, check the "Overwrite" option just above the "Refresh" button • Now click EndNote X2 • It will re-install the EndNote X2 files. Once it's done, open Word. • Try again to see if the problem is fixed. • If not, contact ITS Helpdesk (x6601) to check installation.

CWYW (in Word) • Start with a Word document • Position the cursor in the text where you wish to insert the citation • From EndNote Add-in Tab • Insert Citation --> Find Citation... • In the Find box, enter the text you need to search for • When found, press Insert button to insert the reference to your paper

  26. CWYW (in EndNote) • On a Word document, position the cursor in the text where you wish to add the citation • Go to EndNote X2 tab --> Go to EndNote • Select a reference • Click Tools --> Cite While You Write [CWYW] --> Insert Selected Citation(s)

  27. CWYW remarks (1) • Drag-and-drop references from EndNote Library to Word document • Macros will be created on your Word document. Do not delete them or the “Update Citations and Bibliography” function will fail • Delete macros when there is no more editing • Use ‘Remove Field Codes’ to clean up macros (EndNote 9 only)

  28. CWYW remarks (2) • Use { } for temporary citations in Word, i.e., {smith, 2005} while writing paper • Make use of ‘Edit Citation(s)’, e.g.,
