  2. True or false • Born in Vermont

  3. False • Born in New York and moved to Pennsylvania when I was 11 years old

  4. True or false • My favorite Poem is by Robert Frost

  5. True- THE Road not taken Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same, And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.

  17. Play Two Truths • Tell the members of your table group about you by using three statements: • Two of the statements are true • One of the statements is false • Have the members of your table group decide which statements are true, and which one is false • Continue until all members of the group have had a turn

  18. Write on Index Card • ON FRONT OF CARD • Write your first & last name and science class period • Write down something UNIQUE you would like to share to the class about yourself. (NOTE - if it is a sport, be specific; for example - I have played baseball for 10 years (OR) I helped my field hockey team win 3 tournaments this summer • ON BACK OF CARD • Write a personal goal that you are willing to share with me. It can be a goal for this year or the future OR a recent accomplishment that you are proud of.

  19. First Day - Closure • Tell me something you learned about someone in this class that you didn’t already know. • Tell me something you learned about your teacher.

  20. Day 2 Warm-Up: (on notebook paper)CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS 1. A positive classroom is … ______________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________ 2. A positive student is … ______________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________ 3. An effective teacher is … ______________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________ 4. Define “RESPECT” in you own words ... ______________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________

  21. My Goal: • To create a FUN & INTERESTING Learning Experience where you develop: • a better understanding of our planet • how our planet functions • how our planet changes • How earth’s living things (biotic)are influenced by non-living (abiotic) factors

  22. Syllabus Academic and Advanced Syllabus Additional Advanced Science Requirements

  23. Next… • Go Over Website • Hand-out Textbooks • Vocab List ****First Vocab Quiz will be on Thursday 9/8/16

  24. Day 2 – Closure • What % does you exam grade count towards your final grade? • How many Core district performance assessments will you take in science this year? • Does this year count on your high school transcript? • What do you need for tomorrow? • What is my goal for this class?

  25. WHAT IS SCIENCE? Individual Answer:______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ Group Answer:______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ Teacher Answer: ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________

  26. WHAT IS SCIENCE? Individual Answer:______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ Group Answer:______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ Teacher Answer: Science is both a dynamic and systematic process for discovering how the physical and natural world works

  27. Scientific Literacy What is scientific literacy? Does it mean being an expert? Does it mean knowing all the facts? Does it mean knowing science vocabulary? Science Literacy- Neil deGrasse Tyson https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gFLYe_YAQYQ

  28. Scientific Literacy So why does it matter for us to be able to know about science and think scientifically? • To be able to sort fact from fiction • To understand issues that affect our lives • Science drives technology and innovation

  29. Unscramble the steps to the scientific method. voebtiosanr otesuniq sreecahr tsihyhspeo pimtxerene lyasnais lncuocison

  30. STEPS OF THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD • Observation – recognizing a problem • Question - Questioning the problem. Why? How? Etc. • Research – find out as much as you can about question • Hypothesis - Guessing the answer to the question (educated guess). • Experiment – Testing your hypothesis • Analysis - Analyze data and observations from experiment. • Conclusion - Do the results of the experiment support your hypothesis?

  31. Theory • A hypothesis that has been tested repeatedly and supported by evidence. • New information can change a theory.

  32. The scientific method is NOT linear

  33. Which is really Gold? Explain your reasoning. A B Which is really Silver? Explain your reasoning. C D

  34. Is it Gold or Silver? Have you heard of fool’s gold? Maybe you have seen a piece of it. This mineral is actually pyrite, and it was passed off as real gold. However, there are simple tests that you can do to keep from being tricked.

  35. Minerals can be identified by their properties. Some properties, such as color, vary from sample to sample. Density*, however, remains consistent across samples. In this activity you will use the scientific method to determine if several samples are gold or silver. * Density of gold is 19.0 g/cc * Density of silver is 10.5 g/cc

  36. Day 3 - Closure • Is the scientific method linear? • How does the Gold and Silver Activity connect to the Question “What is Science?”
