  2. Why Social Media • Students use and respond to social media • Students can easily share social media with others • Reach a larger audience than with flyers and posters • Less expensive and more ecological than paper • Easier to alter message, send out new messages

  4. Facebook Options at BMCC • Go to BMCC homepage: www.bmcc.cuny.edu • Click on Facebook icon

  5. Public Affairs: BMCC Facebook • Follow us by clicking on “Like” • Large audience already in place • We post once a day about BMCC events, faculty or student honors, news about the school, etc.

  6. Like vs. Follow • Liking a Page: When someone likes your page on Facebook, they automatically opt into following your page. This means that your posts will be seen in their feed and you will be listed in their ‘liked’ directory. • Someone can unfollowyour page after liking your page, which means won’t see your content very often. • Following a Page: Facebook users have the option to follow a page without hitting the like button. These types of followers will still see your posts in their newsfeed, but they won’t be considered a like on your page.

Office of Student Activities on Facebook • BMCC Office of StudentActivities: https://www.facebook.com/groups/bmccstudentactivities/?fref=nf • This is a Public Group—students can join • Members can contribute posts • Click on” Members” and then Administrators to see who is running the group • Click on “Join Group” to become a member of this group

  8. Facebook Page vs. Group • Facebook Page • Public – anyone can view (ex. BMCC Facebook page) • Only page administrators can post • Viewers can “like” your page to follow it • Facebook Group • For a more limited audience (ex. Office of Student Activities) • Can be public or private (everyone can view posts or just group members) • Group members can post and communicate with each other • Administrator can delete inappropriate posts

  9. Student Affairs Facebook Page • This is a regular Facebook page where only the page administrator(s) post content • You can “like” the page to follow their content • They can “like” your page to follow your content

  15. ASAP Facebook Page • You can post videos • Keep them short (30 seconds) or people won’t take the time to watch them

  16. Best Practices for Facebook Use image associated with event for various media • Ex. Blood Drive: same image used in website calendar entry and Facebook entry • Hyperlink from Facebook entry to BMCC website • To calendar and/or department website

Suggested Content for Facebook • Events such as films, lectures, club meetings • Make sure events are on the BMCC web calendar first • News such as faculty book or article • Student accomplishments such as an award, getting into a new school or job • Reposts of like-minded organizations or other schools

Starting a Facebook Account • One or more people from department/office must serve as administrator(s) • Oversee and add content regularly (at least 3x per week) • Approve new members if it is a group • If your department/office has an associated student club: • Make sure there is a faculty/staff member as a co-administrator • Students leave after two years—someone more long-term needs to be involved

  20. Add Hyperlinks • Add hyperlink to website or calendar entry when creating a Facebook post

  21. Getting More Facebook Likes • Post engaging content • Be active on Facebook (post at least several times a week) • Advertise your Facebook page • On your webpage • On emails • On handouts • Invite “friends” to like your page • Become Facebook friends with other departments, etc.

  23. Invite Friends to Like Your Page • Become Facebook friends with faculty, staff, and students through your BMCC Facebook page so you can invite them to like your page
