  1. Welcome to DHCSKindergarten Open House Kindergarten Mission Statement Our mission is to nurture children’s development, interactions, and language through rich, planned curriculum. We commit ourselves to helping every child develop to their own potential. We will provide an atmosphere that is conducive to learning, with a well-balanced curriculum supported by a professional staff. We will strive to create a strong sense of community while creating a caring and respectful environment.

  6. Five Keys Areas of Reading • The Five Key Areas of Reading Instruction • Imagine It! completely addresses the five key areas of Reading. 1. Phonemic Awareness 2. Systematic, Explicit Phonics 3. Fluency 4. Vocabulary 5. Comprehension

  7. Phonemics Awareness The ability to hear, identify and manipulate sounds. For example…separating the spoken word "cat" into three distinct sounds, /k/, /a/, and /t/.

  8. Phonics The ability to identify and understand the sound of each letter of the alphabet.

  9. Fluency The ability to easily read letters, words and simple sentences.

  10. Vocabulary The ability to acquire and use new words.

  11. Comprehension The ability to understand passages in stories.

  12. 6-Traits of Writing Voice – Are the details evident in the picture? Sentence Fluency – Can your child write a simple sentence by themself? For example: I like to play tag. This sentence could be phonetically spelled. Conventions – Spaces, punctuation marks, appropriately used capitol letters. Ideas– Do the words match the picture? Do you see details in the words? Organizations- Does the writing make sense? Word Choice- Use of adjectives and verbs.
