  2. During this time (1887 and beyond): Labor was rewarded based on: • Race • Sex • Nationality • Social class

  3. Steam and Electricity replaced jobs and increased efficiency Certain industries were made possible due to: • The manufacture of ice • The telephone • The adding machine

  4. Railroads also became a big industry.. However, many railroads were built with blood, sweet, and dirty politics.

  5. The monopolization of industries bred many wealthy business men Few notables: • J.P Morgan • Bought Andrew Carnegies Steel company • Created the “US Steel corporation” • J.P Morgan Chase • John D Rockefeller - Oil company flourished under Rockefeller

  6. Andrew Carneige • Made his fortune through steel • Replicated “Bessemer Process” In 1884 Grover Cleveland became President • He vastly supported large companies • Did not aid Texan farmers upon request

  7. 1889-1893 Benjamin Harrison was President • During his Presidency: • He passed the “Sherman Anti Trust” act • It forbade combinations in restraint of trade • Was used to curb labor unions or labor combination

  8. The 14th Amendment was initially created to help freed slaves.. • However, it started to be used as a way to protect corporations - corporations used it to call themselves “people” in court, granted them the right of due process

  9. Education was also spreading and becoming easily accessible However, governments used schoolhouses to prepare children to uphold the system

  10. Immigrants were pouring in.. Revolutionary talks were taking place, while at the same time, many resented and rioted against the Immigrants.

  11. Unions were being formed as a way to fight against unjust treatment. Many women were also joining the “Knights of Labor”

  12. In 1893 banks crashed and the United States entered into “The Great Depression” • Also, in 1860-1910 The US Army succeeded in removing “Indians” from the Great Planes leaving the area wide open for rail roads.

  14. Inventions that helped farming grow to industrious scales • Steel Plows • Mowing Machines • Reapers • Harvesters • Improved cotton gins

  15. Farmers were pilling up enormous debt • To cure this, Charles Macune pushed forward the sub treasury plan were the United States would have warehouses of farm produce, in which farmers contributed to it. These farmers would then receive certificates for their produce.

  16. Racism started to intensify • Elections were being affected • Politicians were dividing the people • Patriotism was needed to hold the country together • Two years after McKinley became president, America declared war against Spain
