  2. Automobile Expert • To find the velocities after impact, I used the following equation: SUV: Wagon: vf2 = vi2 + 2ad 02= x2 + 2 (-2 m/s2 * 2 m) 0= x2 + -8 8=x2 Vi= 2.83 m/s 02 = x2 + 2(-3 m/s2 * 24 m) 0 = x2 – 144 144 = x2 Vi = 12 m/s

  3. Collision Expert • To find the velocity of the SUV before it hit the Wagon, I used the equation: (mvSUV + mvwagon)b = (mvSUV + mvwagon)a 3000(v) + 2000(0) = 3000(2.83) + 2000(12) 3000v + 0 = 8490 + 24000 3000v = 32490 Vi = 10.83 m/s

  4. Investigator I had to decipher what kind of collision this was. It’s inelastic because… • The objects collide and do not continue to move as one unit. • Not a perfectly inelastic collision • If the objects hit and Newton’s Third Law is followed, The first object would stop on collision, but the second object would “receive”/react with the same momentum • Not an elastic collision • The laws of conservation • Energy total stays the same, but the Kinetic Energy changes via sound and friction

  5. In Conclusion • Converting the velocity taken from the Collision Expert from 10.83 m/s to km/hr determined that the SUV was traveling at 38.99 km/hr. • Which was 3.99 km/hr over the speed limit of 35 km/hr. • So the fault should be on the SUV for speeding.
