  3. Bali Bombings October 12th 2002 • 202 People Died • 88 Australians : 16 from Perth • 38 Indonesians • 160 People Injured • Many family and community members were traumatised • Impact Still Felt 5 Years On

  4. Kingsley Football Club • 20 Men Went on Post Finals Trip to Bali • 7 Men were Killed /14 Injured • 2 were Airlifted to the Eastern States • 11 of the Injured were flown Home in Kerry Stokes Private Jet

  5. Aims of the Study/Field Research To Investigate : The mutilayered effects and forms of support received by directly affected victims, and their indirectly affected family members in 2002 and in the intervening period

  6. Sub Aims continued • To systematically critique the literature on the effects and forms of support available in this & previous attacks • To develop a framework that may be used by professionals and non professionals in the aftermath of a crisis • To highlight the need to choose appropriate and culturally relevant interventions

  9. Data Collection Bali/Perth • In Depth Semi -Structured Interviews with Directly and Indirectly Affected Victims • In Depth Semi Structured Interviews with Professional and Volunteer Responders, also Key Informants • Maintained a Reflective Journal • Site Visits • Literature Review

  10. Overview Interviews Perth • Most occurred in my office • Mainly Males • Voiced the Need To Talk • Most economically reasonably well off • Appeared Resilient

  11. Overview Interviews Bali • Most Occurred in Participants Homes • Mainly Females • Most in Conditions of Overcrowding • Economically Distressed • Appeared Resilient

  12. Daily Reflective Journal • Overview of the Day • Very Cathartic • Reflections will be matched with Interviews to Identify Key Factors • Good to Review Now as Memories Fade

  14. Limitations of Cultural Interpreter • Time Constraints • Financial Constraints Initially • Illness : Dengue Fever • Academic Background Varied • Both Required Monitoring

  15. Reflections • Enjoyed the Process • Felt Humbled by the Process • Gained Valuable and Unique Information from Every Single Interview • Feedback Thus Far Suggests Most Participants Felt this was a Positive Experience

Preliminary Findings • NGO’S, Voluntary Organisations, Community and Individuals Gave Tirelessly • Initial Informal Support Was Very Useful • Some DAV, IDV, responders appear in Need of Support Almost 6 Years On • Most are Not Receiving Any Support • Exploration of the Notion of Resilience Required
