  4. Project Background • 2005: The idea of a Sustainability Centre appears on the agenda of the Senate Sub-Committee on the Environment (SCE). The discussion would resurface habitually. • November 2005: a working group of SMP, referred to as the Environmental Center/Sustainability Office (EC/SO) taskforce was formed. • Summer 2006: funding secured from the Mary H. Brown Fund to hold community consultation events on the topic of a Sustainability Center

  5. 2006-2007 • September 2006: EC/SO taskforce partners with ENVR 401 to prepare a feasibility study for the SCE • SMP Community consultation events • Series of focused roundtables • Incorporation of the various models into a proposal outlining a feasible model for a Sustainability Centre at McGill

Proposal – Mission • To enable McGill University to strive towards institutional leadership in environmental, social and economic sustainability. • To that end, the Sustainability Centre will: • Promote and coordinate research and innovation in the field of sustainability • Plan and implement sustainable practices throughout McGill University • Encourage and facilitate the cooperation of all members of the McGill community in applying the principles and methods of sustainability

Proposal – Organizational Structure • Ideally located directly under Associate Vice Principal Services to: • facilitate strong links with relative partners • such as waste management, Rethink, and the SCE • ensure administrative authority • The goals for these relationships are: • To encourage open access to information • To facilitate audits (waste, energy, etc.) • To measure progress using indicators developed by the SCE • To facilitate curriculum development and integration of sustainability into university programs • To implement sustainable practices throughout the university

Proposal - Space • Research Coordinator: faculty member (no additional funding needed) • supervising projects and/or connecting students with supervisors • Sustainability Coordinator(s), full-time • planning, implementing and facilitating sustainable practices • Administrative assistant, two days a week • general administrative tasks

  11. Proposal - Funding • Sources: • student fee levies (with opt-outs) • faculty and staff fee levies on an opt-in basis • administrative operating budget • external grants
