  6. One gets opposite type of result when there are too many cells in a precursor to an embryonic structure Example in early Drosophila development when there is a 6X dose of Bicoid in the egg: huge head precursor yields normal structures in the end, due to an excess of cell death

  7. Conclusion Cells have mechanisms that allow them to sense their neighbors and to either proliferate or die until the correct two-dimensional pattern of neighbors has been generated. This property of cells is central to the development and maintenance of multicellular organisms.
