Page 359 The American System • Henry Clay, Speaker of the House from Kentucky • Improve the nation by helping the economy in each region and increasing the power of the federal government • Tariffs (taxes on imported goods) to protect American businesses from foreign competition • promoted American industry, but helped the North more than the South • A national bank to encourage business • Federal money for roads, bridges and canals
