… designed to engage the students’ attention at the beginning of class. Called the “anticipatory set” or the “bell ringer”, it serves as a focus for the day’s activities.


Initiated at the very beginning of class

  • It tells the students what they are about to learn.

  • It is NOT about

    rote drill and kill.


The hook engages students in the topic

  • It must be relevant to the students’ individual background and life context.
