  1. When is a Well Considered Abandoned

  2. Overview • Introduction • When is a well considered abandoned? • Why are the two criteria for plugging a well appropriate • Have you seen an abandoned well? • Conclusion

  3. Why is this important? • An abandoned well that has not been properly plugged, poses a great health and safety hazard • It is important to know if a well is considered abandoned or not

  4. When is a well considered abandoned? • A well is considered abandoned if it has not been used for a period of six months or more. • A well is considered in use if it: • is in good condition with active components, and • is a well with good casing and capped.

  5. Why would the two criteria for fixing an abandoned well be appropriate? • A well in good condition is not a risk to people or the groundwater resources. Good casing prevents groundwater mixing and pressure loss, good pump and column should seal the top of the well. • Good casing and capped: prevents mixing of groundwater and capped casing prevents people from falling into the well and surface contaminants from entering the well.

  6. Have you seen an abandoned well? • How would your experiences have protected or been a risk to people or the groundwater resource?

  7. Conclusion • According to state law a well is considered abandoned if it has not been used for six consecutive months. However a well can be considered in use if • a non-deteriorated well that contains the casing, pump, and pump column in good condition. • a non-deteriorated well that has been capped.
