  1. The Rape of Nanking By: Karla Mejia5.12.11P.3 “Hate is a powerful emotion. Unless kept in check, hate can cause an avalanche of destruction”

  2. Document 1 • The Japanese have erased this portraying image of them not conducting any harm toward the Chinese. “Many Japanese textbooks mention the Nanking Massacre, yet the accompanying images of the 1937 event are ‘jubilant’ Japanese soldiers marching into the city or celebrating at its gates”.

  3. Document 2

  4. Document 6 • The Japanese Government has denied the existence of the Rape of Nanking. The crimes committed such have never been committed by mankind. “The Japanese Government has, to date, steadfastly denied its wartime responsibilities” (Document 6). “Japanese forces engaged in the rape and murder of civilians, and the wholesale slaughter of Chinese POWs. Estimates range from 140,000 to 300,000 civilians murdered, and 20,000 to 80,000 women raped. However, even before the full extent of the slaughter was known, Japan was already trying to deny and cover up what had happened at Nanking”.

  5. Document 8 • In document 8,Lieutenant Ono is referring the Japanese to a lesser value, much more of a cat or a dog. “You must not consider the Chinese to a human being, but only as something of rather less than a dog or a cat”. Lieutenant Ono is portraying the Chinese is an absurd way, which is unnecessary.

  6. Document 9 • Referring to Document 9, the actions that were committed by the Japanese Army are atrocities. Nagatomi Hakudo implies that, “I remember being driven back in a truck along a path that had been cleared through piles of thousands and thousands of slaughtered bodies. Wild dogs were gnawing at the dead flesh as we stopped and pulled a group of Chinese prisoners out of the back”.

  7. To whom it may concern, My name is Karla Mejia, I currently attend Camino Nuevo High school, and I am from the United States. A wise man once said “all men are created equal”, if this is so, then why was there so much hatred and rage that filled the hearts of the Japanese government under Emperor Hirohito towards the Chinese in the year 1937? In 1931, Japan invaded the Chinese Northeast Province of Manchuria. In 1937, Japan decided to conquer the rest of China. Militarists within the Japanese Army and navy pressured the Japanese government into making war. Which led to the Rape of Nanking. Words that must never be spoken, due to such actions and crimes that were committed, the Rape of Nanking, up to this day, is receiving such infamy. Two fine adequate countries, fighting for ignorance and absurd differences. I strongly believe that the Japanese Government should offer an apology towards China because the Rape of Nanking is an atrocity. No should crimes should have ever been committed by mankind. Innocent little Chinese boys, having little knowledge of what was occurring during 1937, were having their heads cut off. The Japanese soldiers having no guilt, and no heart, would send the heads of the Chinese boys back to their family, or they would take in pride and keep it as a souvenir. Rape, their target were mostly pregnant Chinese women. Women were constantly being raped until they bled to death. They had no control of their unimaginable actions. The Japanese having this infamy in their history, some historians deny the existence of the Rape of Nanking. High school students should indeed learn the truth about what really occurred in the Rape of Nanking/ Not only are high school students unaware of the infamous atrocities that were committed, but others try to brush of the fact that there was an event in history that turned into a systematic mass killing. Sincerely, Karla Mejia
