  1. Media or Technical Illustration Brief AS 3.5 (5 credits)

  2. Year 13 Graphics: Assignment 3 • This last assignment of the year is related to what is commonly called ‘Graphic Design’. In other words, it uses Graphic techniques to promote or display information with an emphasis on visual appeal or impact (as opposed to the last 2 assignments in which you had to provide more objective or technical information such as space relationships, desk construction etc.)

  3. Within this area and at this level students are encouraged to formulate a brief in an area that interests them. In the past students have written briefs based on: Year 13 Graphics: Assignment 3

  4. Year 13 Graphics: Assignment 3 • advertising, • marketing and selling • company literature and brochures • newspaper or magazine layout. • technical illustration of products • fashion design • packaging and presentation • A children’s book cover • CD Cover • symbolic charts and sequencing diagrams • web page design • Corporate identity (e.g. last year’s airline) • Clothing/Street wear label

Year 13 Graphics: Assignment 3 Writing your design brief: The final version should indicate • The client, and some background info, e.g what they do • Style (e.g. informal, corporate etc) • Purpose (eg. Raise awareness, give info, sell) • Outcomes (eg. Webpage? Brochure? Stationary set?) • Target audience • All specs (negotiated) • Constraints (not negotiable .. Eg legal, ethical)

Company name or product and write 3 associated words • Concept map (see photocopied handout) • Web/spider diagram (see photocopied handout) • Free writing • Dream Diaries • Forced Analogies

Year 13 Graphics: Assignment 3 Other points to consider: • Consider EVERYTHING that pops into your head or is suggested by others • Aim to gather large quantities of information • Challenge your own preconceptions and stereotypes • Build on ideas as your brainstorm • Record EVERYTHING immediately!!! • Work in a comfortable and relaxing environment • Allow for wild and wacky ideas!

Year 13 Graphics: Assignment 3 Research Use a range of sources: eg Libraries, existng ideas, site visits, other people, books, magazines, TV, Book Stores and shops, internet, encylopedia, thesaurus, students’ work How to gather/record research: Read/take notes, photograph, interview/ask, survey, collect/compare, photocopy, sketch/trace, analyse and record, search key words
