  2. New Generation of Smokers? Since the 70’s, the number of American smokers has been consistently reduced, although there are still 34 million smokers today. Public education and governmental restrictions have made smoking a lot more difficult and expensive. However, vaping using new types of electronic devices has attracted a new generation of smokers, mostly youths and young adults. What are E-cigarettes and what other new smoking devices are out there? I talked with an expert in tobacco products – Dr. Ling Yuan, Professor at the University of Kentucky – about the electronic smoking devices. He showed me one type of E-cigarette, JUUL, and another new device, called Heated Tobacco Product (iQOS). I took pictures of these products and interviewed Dr. Yuan.

  3. These products are cool looking and it is easy to see why young people are attracted to them; however, it is debatable whether they are safer compared to traditional cigarettes. In general, these products don’t burn so they release less of the harmful compounds that are produced by pyrolysis (burning of cigarettes). Still, many young people get really sick from vaping. Lung injuries and deaths have been associated with vaping, although these cases have been linked to modified vaping devices and modified e-liquids obtained from the black market. In addition, vaping can make COVID-19 patients’ symptoms much worse. I believe education is crucial to reducing the usage of these products. Both parents and young people should educate themselves on these products, understand how they work, and be informed about the risks. Only when the whole communities are well informed can we reduce a new generation of smokers.
