  3. What LTC Has Learned • Interviewed Sandy Butschli, VP Information Services at Aurora Clinical Laboratories (ACL) in West Allis • IT professionals need to understand • the practical use of health care systems • how the user interacts with health-based applications • the business of healthcare

What LTC Has Learned • When ACL hires IT, having an exposure to healthcare is very good, but not critical • Because of federal stimulus money, activities related to Electronic Health Records (EHR) are accelerating • Healthcare professionals are going to be challenged moving from manual/paper processes to laptops and mobile electronic devices • Healthcare facilities will be using digital records for analysis to make better decisions and to be more efficient

In-Demand IT for Healthcare • Networking • Security – this is at the core • Connectivity and interfacing with equipment • Web/Software Development/Database • Integration of multiple software products • Developing front-end Web tools to integrate with various healthcare software • Computer Support • Support the user who is interacting with the healthcare software • Provide training to healthcare workers on new systems and new devices

What LTC is Doing • Business Division developing a 1-year 13 credit certificate for IT professionals/IT graduates with the following existing classes: • Medical Terminology • Healthcare Delivery Systems • Accounting for Professionals • Pharmacology for Allied Health • Health Insurance Reimbursement

  7. What LTC is Doing • Health Division creating a Clinical Information Management degree • Includes Computer Concepts
