  1. 1 Kings 4 “29And God gave Solomon wisdom and understanding exceeding much, and largeness of heart, even as the sand that is on the sea shore. 30And Solomon’s wisdom excelled the wisdom of all the children of the east country, and all the wisdom of Egypt. 31For he was wiser than all men.”

  2. All Is Vanity… Apart From God! “Fear God and Keep His commandments”… (Ecc. 12:13) And I applied my mind to seek and to search out by wisdom all that is done under heaven; it is an unhappy business that God has given to the sons of men to be busy with. I have seen everything that is done under the sun; and behold, all is vanity and a striving after wind. What is crooked cannot be made straight, and what is lacking cannot be numbered. I said to myself, "I have acquired great wisdom, surpassing all who were over Jerusalem before me; and my mind has had great experience of wisdom and knowledge." And I applied my mind to know wisdom and to know madness and folly. I perceived that this also is but a striving after wind. (Ecclesiastes 1:13-17 RSV)

  3. Many Have A Full Life But End It Empty… • And he told them a parable, saying, "The land of a rich man brought forth plentifully; and he thought to himself, 'What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?' And he said, 'I will do this: I will pull down my barns, and build larger ones; and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; take your ease, eat, drink, be merry.' But God said to him, 'Fool! This night your soul is required of you; and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?' So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God." (Luke 12:16-21 RSV)

  4. A “Personal Relationship” With God… • Anyone who is a faithful child of God has a "personal relationship" with Him. (There is no other kind...you can't have a non-personal relationship with God). • Everyone who has ever been a faithful child of God has had a "personal relationship" with Him... • Noah "walked with God"... Gen. 6:9; cf. 2 Pet. 2:5 • Abraham was called "the friend of God"... Jas. 2:23; cf. Heb. 11:13-14 • Moses spoke with the Lord "face to face, just as a man speaks to his friend"... Exo. 33:11 • David was a man of whom God said, he is "a man after my heart, who will do all my will"... Acts 13:22 • Paul.... 2 Tim. 1:12-14

  5. Our Relationship With God… • It is more than just belief. • You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe--and shudder. (James 2:19 RSV) • We must be converted into the image of His Son! • For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the first-born among many brethren. (Romans 8:29 RSV) • He has made everything beautiful in its time; also he has put eternity into man's mind, yet so that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end. (Ecclesiastes 3:11 RSV)

  6. Only One Way To Have A Relationship With God! • Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but by me. (John 14:6 RSV) • “ Common Salvation” – Jude 3 • Note the seven “ones” of Ephesians 4:4-6.

  7. A True Relationship Is Based Upon Love… • And he said to him, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. (Matthew 22:37-39 RSV)

  8. Those Who Live To Please God Are Blessed By Him… • There is nothing better for a man than that he should eat and drink, and find enjoyment in his toil. This also, I saw, is from the hand of God; for apart from him who can eat or who can have enjoyment? For to the man who pleases him God gives wisdom and knowledge and joy; but to the sinner he gives the work of gathering and heaping, only to give to one who pleases God. This also is vanity and a striving after wind. (Ecclesiastes 2:24-26 RSV)

  9. Our Relationship With God Gives Us Hope… • But we would not have you ignorant, brethren, concerning those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep. For this we declare to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, shall not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the archangel's call, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first; then we who are alive, who are left, shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air; and so we shall always be with the Lord. Therefore comfort one another with these words. (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 RSV)

  10. We Can Have An Amazing Attitude Through Our Lives… • Count it all joy, my brethren, when you meet various trials, (James 1:2 RSV) • We know that in everything God works for good with those who love him, who are called according to his purpose. (Romans 8:28 RSV) • Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal which comes upon you to prove you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice in so far as you share Christ's sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed. If you are reproached for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. (1 Peter 4:12-14 RSV)

  11. Conclusion • What did those in the New Testament do who had such a relationship with God... • They obeyed the gospel... Acts 2:38 • They "continually devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayers"... Acts 2:42 • They were required to do all by the authority of Christ... Col. 3:17 • They joined themselves to other disciples to worship God together and to do the work God requires of local churches of Christ... Acts 9:26-29; Rom. 16:1-2 • They were required not to forsake the assembling of god's people... Heb. 10:25 • Friends, for those of the 1st Century and for us, there is no such thing as a personal relationship with God apart from faith in and obedience to the word of God. Those who believe and teach otherwise are following the doctrines of men... not God!
