  2. What is the survey about? 2

How were households selected? 3 • 18,000 households were randomly selected from Electoral Register to participate in the survey - 13% of households in Malta and Gozo • Sample stratified to achieve statistical representation at district level and proportionate to the size of each locality • Importance being given to ensure coverage of different household and family members to ensure that we capture all travel habits and requirements

  4. Why should households participate? 4 • Selected households will be representing others with similar socio-economic characteristics • This is their chance to contribute towards getting around faster, cleaner and safer • Participants will be granted a 10% discount on flights from Air Malta and will enter into a lottery draw for 2 out of 20 flights

  5. What about confidentiality? 5 • Responses will be completely anonymous • Each household was given a reference number and only PricewaterhouseCoopers has access to the personal information of participants • When responses are to be entered into the database by the data inputters a new entry number will be given to disassociate household information • No information that can identify any individual or household will be published as a result of the survey

  13. Step 1: Confirming participation 13 • By post, by completing the return slip cut (part of the cover letter) and sending it back using the small pre-paid envelope • Online, on www.nhts2010.gov.mt • By Phone, On 80074411

Step 2: Completing Questionnaire 14 Questionnaire to be filled in for every household member of 11 years or more For questions 1 to 15 a separate column is to be used for every person in the household (except questions 9 & 10 as these relate to household) For question 16 to 21 a separate column for each vehicle is to be used

Step 3: Completing the Diaries Imp: Each trips relates to a one-way travel movement from one destination to another using one means of transport 15 Details of trips made on Travel Day - 26th May A different diary to be filled in for every household member (11 yrs+) 1 diary to be filled in for each person - to match the colour and person number in the questionnaire

Assistance to households in completing survey • By Phone, on 80074411 between 9:00am and 7:00pm • Online, on ww.nhts2010.gov.mt • By meeting a representative of the Survey Team at a Local Council: • Wednesday 19th May 2010 (19:00 – 20:00): Cospicua, Qormi, Naxxar, St. Paul’s Bay • Thursday 20th May 2010 (18:00 – 19:00): Paola, Safi, San Gwann, Victoria (Gozo) • Monday 24th May 2010 (17:00 – 18:00): Attard, Fgura, Floriana, Siggiewi • Tuesday 25th May 2010 (18:00 - 19:00): Birkirkara, Mgarr, Rabat, Zejtun 16

  18. Step 4: Sending back questionnaires and diaries The completed questionnaire and diaries are to be returned together with the lottery ticket: • By post, using the large pre-paid envelope • Online, on www.nhts2010.gov.mt 18

  19. Step 5: Benefiting from participation • All participants have a 10% discount on flight tickets purchased from Air Malta and a chance to win 2 of 20 free flights to any European destination • Participants who submit survey online will also benefit from their participation. 1879962 19

  20. Some important points • Households are to confirm participation as soon as possible • Survey applies to those using public transport or cars • Survey also applies to those who are not travelling on Travel Day, e.g. staying at home or going to be abroad • Information required on vehicles in Questionnaire relates to Saturday 22 May and Sunday 23 May • Diaries relate to trips made on Wednesday 26 May 2010 • Survey responses to be sent as soon as possible after 26 May so that households can participate in lottery on 25 June • Any questions can be answered on Freephone 8007 4411 20
