  2. Purpose What is digital storytelling? How can it be used in the classroom? What do I need to get started? How do I put it all together?

Digital Storytelling…allows students to • utilize a variety of skills and resources to plan and create a multimedia project to express their ideas, knowledge, and creativity • compare and contrast the past and present • represent abstract and concrete ideas • express their thoughts, feelings and personal life experiences. • Provides teachers with a way to • sensitize students to diverse perspectives and biases • provide visual cues to reinforce concepts

Plan Digital Story • Images: collect, edit, collage, caption, resave • Music/Sounds: save clips • Storyboard: Write narration, select music clips, plan image sequence, timing and image transitions • Don’t forget title ‘slide’, credits slide(s) and ‘fair use’ statement(Prepared under Educational Fair Use Guidelines. Further Use Restricted)

Use available tools • PowerPoint to edit, collage, save images. • Insert (Pictures, Clip Art, Shapes, Text Boxes) • Edit with drawing tools and picture tools. • File, save as (file type, scroll down), gif or jpg. • Other tools? Web 2.0 tools • Wordle.net (word clouds) • Audacity to record narration and mix music and sounds. • Windows MovieMaker to compile the final product.

  9. Create a Wordle Cloud…try it. Try it • Create word clouds with Wordle. http://www.wordle.net • Type words multiple times to increase size. • Use ~ (tilda) to hold phrases together • Separate using a space • Screen capture--ALT, PrintScreen—paste into PowerPoint and save as a single image.

  12. Recording Soudtrack • Use Audacity to record narration track • Export as mp3 • Open narration track and saved music file. • Adjust the sound level of each track, generate silence, fade in/out portions. • File, Export as wav or mp3 file. • Save in the same folder with images.

  14. Prepare Digital Story • Assemble story in MovieMaker • Import images and sound files to collections pane • Drag images and sound track down to the timeline • Add image transitions and effects. • Adjust image timings to match sound track. • Save project. Export as a single wmv file.

  15. The finished movie will be a single wmv(windows media video) file.

Right click, preview mp3, ‘Save Target as’ to save in project folder. http://soundboard.com Choose category—try Science. Search a topic.Playlist to preview; Download track, choose track. http://freeplaymusic.com Choose ‘style’ or ‘feel’; click on mp3 to open and preview or save.

  18. Audacity • Audacity –a free open source software for recording and editing sounds. Free download from ‘sourceforge’ http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/windowsAlso download LAME MP3 encoder - Allows Audacity to export MP3 files.The first time you use the program to save a mp3, the program looks for a way to encode the file. The file must be associated using LAME encoder file ‘lame_enc.dll’. Browse for the file.
