Provide a collaborative portal for the tribology community Quickly bootstrap and operate a sustainable, effective Electronic Virtual Organization (EVO) for the atomic-scale friction community Wiki-based solution provides the following benefits: Articles can be created, edited, moved, or deleted at anytime Articles can be searched Files in many different formats can be uploaded and shared Articles can be monitored actively or passively During summer 2008, Mr. J. Keith Gulledge, a teacher at Eastside High School in Gainesville, FL, worked with AFRESH during an RET opportunity to organize available educational material on atomic-scale friction Atomic-Scale Friction Research and Education Synergy Hub Research Experience for Teachers AFRESH Bibliography AFRESH Cyberinfrastructure • Kick-off workshop held in Gainesville November 8 – 9, 2007 • Determined components within AFRESH that were essential to the tribology community • References of numerous scientific and tribology journals compiled by researchers • Automatic categorization of references according to source title, keywords, authors, and publication year • Format enables people to easily navigate existing references • Commenting and rating system allows references to be discussed and structured based on the communities preferences • The field of atomic-scale friction is organized in a hierarchical format for users of all levels of education and/or experience: • Provides easy navigation of pertinent information • Allows for the advancement of knowledge for the tribology community • Educates people outside of the community on important atomic-scale friction topics • An example of Gulledge’s contributions is illustrated below where he provides a breakdown of important high school Chemistry topics that apply to the teachings of atomic-scale friction. Research Experience for Undergraduates During the 2008-2009 school year, Mr. Diego Mesa, an undergraduate student in the Electrical and Computer Engineering department at the University of Florida, participated in an REU through AFRESH in order to implement a variety of ways in which researchers can contribute to the AFRESH bibliography in a user-friendly way: URL for Wiki-based AFRESH site: http://www.nsfafresh.org • Wikistyle for EndNote which allows for direct creation of articles into the appropriate format for AFRESH • Support for bulk upload of references in EndNote format • Support for upload of a single reference entry through the completion of an online form Cyberinfrastructure Goals and Solutions Cyberinfrastructure Development • MediaWiki chosen as Wiki-based solution for the needs of AFRESH • Ms. Andrea Matsunaga developed the layered architecture for the AFRESH cyberinfrastructure shown on the right • Top layer displays the various extensions integrated into MediaWiki • Templates designed and implemented by Mr. Eric Bucholz allow for standardization in the look and feel of the references and commenting system • Application of template design is illustrated in the article above for the reference and comments
