Food

  • Humans can’t process fat and protein very efficiently at higher altitude

  • More starchy things like rice, noodles, potatoes, and corn

  • Carb heavy

  • Dhal Bhat – Lentils and Rice

  • High altitude can cause deficiencies in iron, calcium, zinc, potassium, and sodium

  • Need foods that are dense in energy, calories, and nutrients

    • Whole grains

    • Dried fruits

    • Granola/cereals

    • Beans and nuts

  • Agency provides 3 meals


Water
Water

  • Need to drink 4 or more liters throughout the day

  • Nepalese tap water is drinkable to the locals but can take a long time for tourists to adjust

  • Most tea houses have running water

  • Can buy bottled water which is safe to drink

  • Can clean the water with iodine tablets

  • Or use water filters

  • Many just boil it

  • Many tourists add tea to get rid of the taste

  • Avoid dehydration, it speeds up altitude sickness

  • Need to eat every few hours to keep metabolic rates up

  • Agency takes care of the meals, but might have to provide own snacks
