Diabetes. How much do you really know? . What is Diabetes. A chronic lifelong illness that effects the major the bodies ability to regulate blood sugar properly. Broken down into two types. Type 1. Type 2. Type 1 Diabetes. Formally known as juvenile diabetes.

  1. Diabetes How much do you really know?

  2. What is Diabetes • A chronic lifelong illness that effects the major the bodies ability to regulate blood sugar properly. • Broken down into two types Type 1 Type 2

  3. Type 1 Diabetes • Formally known as juvenile diabetes. • The causes of this disease are unknown, and the treatment is lifelong. • The disease is onset early in the persons life and can have little effect on a persons day to day activities.

  4. Type 2 Diabetes • Also known as “Adult onset Diabetes”. • The causes of this type of diabetes is related to lifestyle choices and genetics. • The body becomes immune of desensitized to its own method chemicals to breakdown sugar. • More complications arise from this type of diabetes such as heart disease, stroke, and kidney disease.

An organ in your body part of the digestive system which produces hormones for breaking down certain chemicals in your body. • Insulin – Hormone produced by the pancreas that regulates the bodies level of sugar in the blood. • Diabetes directly affects this organ more specifically the production of insulin, and/or affects the tolerance of the body.

  6. Blood sugar is in a state of constant flux. The body produces insulin when the sugars become to high to bring the levels of sugar down • Without insulin to regulate, the body would eventually have uncontrollably high levels of sugar and slip into a diabetic coma.. Leading to death. • How can we manage this disease?

  7. Everyday a person wakes up, they need to determine how much sugar is in the blood. • To do this, individuals poke their finger to draw a small amount of blood. The blood is then analysed for glucose levels with a hand held device. • The device can be seen in the picture on the left.

  8. Diet Change • Food intake must be regulated in order to maintain a healthy balance of sugar in the body. • Natural and nutrient dense foods a are critical for a healthy everyday life. • A close watch must be kept on the amount of sugar the person takes in at every meal. Physical Activity • Maintaining a high level of cardio activity can drastically improve the condition of a diabetics health
