  2. Definitions • Figures or speech- An expression that uses language in a nonliteral way, such as a metaphor or synecdoche, or in a structured or unusual way. • (Washington Irving)to instruct the young, reform the old, correct the town, and castigate the age. • Metaphor- A figure of speech in which a term or phrase is applied to something to which it is not literally applicable in order to suggest a resemblance. • (Ralph Waldo Emerson) Conversation is an art in which a man has all mankind for his competitors, for it is that which all are practicing every day while they live. • Symbolism- The practice of representing things by means of symbols or of attributing symbolic meanings or significance to objects, events, or relationships. • (Edgar Allan Poe)They who dream by day are cognizant of many things which escape those who dream only by night. • Alliteration- The repetition of the same sounds or of the same kinds of sounds at the beginning of words or in stressed syllables. • (Nathaniel Hawthorne)in fine red cloth, surrounded with an elaborate embroidery and fantastic flourishes of gold thread. • Onomatopoeia- The formation or use of words such as buzz or murmur that imitate the sounds associated with the objects or actions they refer to. • (William Cullen Bryant)Those grateful sounds are heard no more, The springs are silent in the sun; The rivers, by the blackened shore, With lessening current run;

  3. Edgar Allan Poe Poe was a dark romantic who valued intuition over logic and reason. Edgar Allan Poe was a dark romantic author in 1827 Poe published a small volume of poems or Tamerlane the book did not attract much attention and Poe could not find other work and in despair he joined the army. While waiting to get into the West Point academy Poe published a second book of poems "Al Araaf". That was his first real recognition as a writer. He laid the foundation for the modern detective story. He published the Raven in 1845. Over all I think Edgar Allan Poe was mad but in the way he was mad is what made him one of the most commemorated authors in American literature.

  4. A Writers Belief • I n American literature all these authors have had a big influence on civilization today, from the way we live , to the society that we live in. The tales they told when they were moving west to the stories about the cities booming, and the love stories or tragedies that set the grounds for our own modern day writings.

  5. Modern Day • Edgar Allan Poe wrote about dark romanticism or love tragedies like in the poem the raven he wrote about his dead wife and wondering if he will ever see her again again his kind of writing has carried on to modern day music artists such as (Lenny Cravitz, Wonder if I will ever see you again) • Henry David Thoreau wrote about nature and outdoors and today we are all concerned about global warming and earth and conservation.
