Lae Urban LLG * Lae Town Development Plan was develop in 2004* Has 10 objectives on environment and social wellbeing for the Town* Some objectives have not being developed due to lack of funding and support from higher authorities* 3 directors and 1 manager for social and health * Manpower within the waste management section is around 45 including coordinator* 6 wards

Lae Urban LLG * Highly industrialised city in PNG* Current WM includes collection and disposal only* Recycling activities are voluntary* The town does not have a specific by-law on waste management although its implements provisions of various national * Laws are not policed effectively due to lack of resources and funding

Lae Urban LLG * No data on waste for he city available mainly due to the inability of the waste section to undertake this task* Daily collection-40m3, weekly 200m3, monthly-1100m3* Collection 2ice a week, collection is done in zones for residential and low covenant areas* Other premises, the services is done daily together with the markets

Lae Urban LLG 　* Rates and charges are paid as follows; 　Commercial-K50.00weekly, K200, K500 Quarterly-Lae Town Council has an established revenue stream from its waste management services wit significant amounts being collected. 　* Transportation of waste is mainly contracted out and includes compactors, flat tops & tipper trucks, tractors. Operation efficiency of these contractors has not been assessed.

  5. 3. Lae Urban LLG 　Littering and illegal dumping is a big problem resulting in pollution of drains, public areas and the shoreline 　Dump is poorly managed. Burning, scavenging in frequent. Current dump has been there for a long time now

The activities are assisting in getting rid of a significant amount of the recyclable materials within the waste stream. The industry is also taking in waste from other centres. 　* The industry has little support from the Provincial and Urban council

Lae Urban LLG Discussion Points* Government should support recycling industrial with incentives to subsidise their operational costs* Cost of some recyclable materials such as PET bottles are very low that recycling operations become to expensive to operate* The structure of the organisation prevents the delivery of funds and resources to undertake efficient waste management activities
