  3. Our Purpose & Approach • We begin with our first problem:Perception • Hours to read the N.T. aloud? • 19 hrs. 10 min. • Hours to read the O.T. aloud? • 64 hrs. 20 min.

  4. The Proper Approach: The Inductive Method • To practice the inductive method we first want to: Gather all the facts!

  5. The Proper Approach: The Inductive Method • It is an independent study Therefore we will not immediately read a commentary

  6. The Proper Approach: The Inductive Method • Above all, it desires to see things as they really are • It is dependent on careful observation A good student will always ask “why”

The Proper Approach: The Inductive Method • It is scientific in its procedure: • It begins with observation: what do you see? • It follows with interpretation: what does it mean? • It pleads for application: how does this affect me? • It concludes with communication: how can I tell this to others?

  8. Psalm 139:17Why Is God’s Word Precious? • Comfort and hope • Direction and goals • Instruction on how to live • Instruction on salvation • Instruction teaching others • Reveals God’s mind • Provides for a relationship with the Creator • Fills us with awe for our Creator

  9. How Would You Read a Love Letter? • With anticipation • Quickly at first to see all there is • More slowly a second time so nothing is missed • Repeatedly, committing it to the heart • With careful observation: even seeing what is not said • With desire to know the one who wrote

  11. Deut. 6:4-9 Our Approach • Begins with devotion to the one/only God • With all our heart, soul, & might • The goal: His words in our heart • The procedure: • Teach them diligently • Talk of them: sitting, walking, lying down, rising up • Write them

Finding a Regular Pattern for Study • Follow a regular, consistent pattern • Read at least once a day • Read in a quiet setting without distractions • Read as a part of a Bible study project • Choose a time of day you are most alert • Read with more intensity & care • Don’t always read the same version/edition
