Christianity- Jesus • Historical records say little about Jesus • Main source – Gospels • Jesus’ popularity upset Roman & Jewish leaders • Teachings did not contradict Jewish laws & first followers were Jewish • PaxRomana made travel & communication easy allowing religion to spread (Peter & Paul)

Jewish Rebellion • 66 AD Zealots rebelled against Rome • 70 AD Romans attacked Jerusalem & destroyed the Temple (Western Wall/ Wailing Wall) • Masada- Jewish hilltop fortress- fought Romans- lost in 73 AD • 1000 Jewish zealots at Masada committed suicide rather than surrendering to the Romans (see Article) • 132 AD another Jewish rebellion • Diaspora- Jews drive from homeland

Persecution of Christians • Christians refused to worship Roman gods- seen as opposition to Roman rule • Scapegoats for political & economic troubles • 64 AD- Nero ordered persecution (fire) • Later years- exiled, imprisoned, executed, crucified, burned, killed by wild animals in circus arenas

  6. World Religions- Christianity • Powerful force- millions of followers • Grew because- • Embraced all people • Gave hope to the powerless
