  2. Bankrupt and Unemployment Rate Bankrupt: unable to pay debts. Unemployment Rate:how Much unemployment increases or decreases in percent form.

  3. Relief Programs and Public Works Relief Programs: programs to help the needy. Public Works: projects built by the government for public use.

  4. Bonus Army Bonus Amy: World War I veterans who were promised a bonus in 1945, but they wanted it sooner, so they camped outside of the capital building in Washington D.C. They camped there for a few months, but President Hoover sent the Army to push them out using tanks, tear gas, and they set their tents on fire.

  5. The 100Days and Surplus 100 Days: the first three months of President Roosevelt’s presidency. In his first three months he passed 15 major laws. Surplus: when farmers produce more than they can sell.

  6. Fireside Chats Fireside Chats: President Roosevelt’s radio speeches from the White House where he addressed the nation. He called them fireside chats because he spoke from a chair near a fire place.

  7. New Deal New Deal: a plan that President Roosevelt came up with to get the nation out of the depression. It consisted of three steps: relief, recover, and reform. How he planned on accomplishing this was through new programs and new laws.

  8. Huey Long and Francis Townsend Huey Long: a senator who opposed the New Deal because he thought the New Deal didn’t do enough to help the poor. He said that the rich should have higher taxes. Francis Townsend: a doctor who thought the New Deal didn’t do enough to help the older citizens. He thought people over 60 years old should get a pension.

  9. Charles Coughlin Charles Coughlin: a priest who thought the New Deal didn’t do enough against bankers and rich investors. He had his own radio show where he spoke to almost 10 million listeners.

  10. Liberty League Liberty League: a group made up of conservative political and business leaders who thought the New Deal went too far.

  11. Pension and Deficit Spending Pension: a sum of money paid to people on a regular basis after they retire. Deficit Spending: spending more money than you take in.

  12. Dust Bowl Dust Bowl: places where there was over-grazing and too much plowing, causing the soil to be very easy to be picked up by strong winds. The high winds picked up the soil and carried the soil in blinding storms. States effected the most were Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, New Mexico, and Colorado.

  13. Black Cabinet and Repatriated Black Cabinet: African American leaders who were invited by President Roosevelt to unofficially advise him. Repatriated: being sent back to your original country.

  14. Francis Perkins and Mary Bethune Francis Perkins: the first woman to hold a Cabinet position. Mary Bethune: a woman who was a part of the Black Cabinet who was appointed head of the National Youth Administration’s Division of Negro Affairs. She was the first woman to be head of a government agency.
