  3. Martial Arts • Individual Sport • All in the Mind • Self-Discipline

  4. Coaching Philosophy • Character Building is number one • Specifically self-discipline, respect and confidence • “Soft as Silk, Hard as a Diamond” • Creates positive sportsmanship

  5. Winning • “Where do you place winning?” • Believes winning comes second after character building. • Wants to make athletes better human beings. • “Losers” discussed in our reading.

  6. Motivation Pain Physical and mental pain to motivate the athlete. Physical: teaching the athlete they have a lot more to work on. Mental: Pain caused by not working hard enough. Rewards “help athletes feel like they have earned success.”

  7. Diversity • Tae Kwon Doe 4-20 years old Smaller activates, keeping the kids occupied, strict, more hands on, partners (which was discussed in the reading), one on one time. • Muay Thai Not as strict, able to watch the class more than teach the class. 16-60 years old

  8. Cooperative Style (The Teacher) • Lets athletes make their own decisions but still guides them. • Balance between directing athletes and allowing them to make decisions on their own. • Teacher

  9. Coaching Objective • Short-term objective is to win/get black belt. • Long- term objective is to build character/become a better person. • “Problems arise when everyone has different objectives.” • Parents

  10. Observation- Positive • Kids respect him but are not scared of him. • Knowledgeable in the sport. • Parents trust him. • Open Communication • Separates the athletes identity from performance.

  11. Observation • Could be more hands on • Allows younger athletes to teach • Cooperative Style/Babysitter • Parents

  12. Own Perception • His perception of coaching and my observation matched.
