  2. There are different accents in the French language: • Acute Accent- É • Dieresis- Ë,Ï,Ü,Ö,Ÿ,Ö,Ä • Grave Accent- À,È,Ì,Ò,Ù • Circumflex- Â,Ê,Î,Ô,Û Accents are important as the can give words different meanings if not added

  3. A dieresis mark is a vowel as being in a separate syllable from any neighbouring vowel. • For example “ai” is pronounced the same as “ï” Example • Égoïste- selfish • Noël- christmas Dieresis

  4. The acute accent only appears over the letter ‘E’ in the French language. • It makes an [ay] sound Example • Bé- bay • Oké- okay Acute accents

  5. Usually doesn’t change the pronunciation of most vowels, except “e”. example • Mère- mother • Très- very Grave accent

  6. It really doesn’t affect the pronunciation but it only replaced the “s” from the Latin version of the word. Example • Hôtpital- hospital • Île- island Circumflex
