  1. Elodea is a slow growing plant. Small organisms make their homes among the leaves, and snails sometimes lay eggs there. Cabomba is a delicate water plant. It grows naturally in streams and ponds. Many fish find the Elodea good eating. Elodea can float in the water or take root at the bottom. Organisms are living things. Animals are organisms. Organisms are living things. People are organisms. Organisms are living things. Trees, plants, and flowers are organisms.

  2. We use our sense of seeing, smelling, hearing, and touching, when we observe things in science, but we never taste. Plants are essential to life on earth. We need the oxygen that plants make during photosynthesis. Our plants need soil, water, light, air, and a place to live. A terrarium is a clear container in which animals and plants can live and be observed. Germination is the process when a seed changes and sprouts into a plant or seedling. Over 400 million years ago, mosses were among the first plants to grow on land.

  3. Conifers appeared on the earth about 150 million years ago and are some of the oldest and largest plants on earth. Moss has no true leaves or roots. Moss grows over damp ground, trees, tree stumps, rock, and cement. Conifers are seed producing trees. The have narrow leaves called needles. Some snail fossils date back 500 million years. Today over 80,000 species of snails live on earth. Aquariums are water filled containers in which fish and water plants can live and be observed. Like plants, animals need water, food, air, and a place to live.

  4. Snails are gastropods, which means stomach-footed. The foot is made mainly of muscle and helps the snail move. There are over 25,000 kinds of fish in the world. Some are as tiny as a fingernail and others are as long as a bus. Snails cannot hear. Snails live in water, but they have lungs and often rise to the surface to breathe air. Guppies eat many young mosquitoes so many humans appreciate them. Fish have a lateral line, a sensory organ, that detects any movement of water around the fish. Fish are vertebrates, which mean they have a backbone.

  5. Pill bugs roll into a ball to protect its softer underside. This is their defense against predators like lizards. . The pill bug (roly poly) has 14 legs and needs moisture at all times because it breathes through gills. Pill bugs have a protective exoskeleton. The exoskeleton can’t expand so it must shed, or molt, in order to grow. The Bess Beetle uses its mandibles to chew wood and eat food. They also prefer to live in dark places. The Bess Beetle has wings, but almost never flies. When it does fly, its flight is short and clumsy. There are over 25,000 species of beetles in the world, which is more than any other type of insect.

  6. Like pill bugs, Millipedes have an exoskeleton and must shed, or molt, in order to grow. The number of segments and legs increase each time it molts. Millipedes avoid light and some are blind. When they are disturbed, they coil up to protect their underside. Millipedes have many legs, ranging from 18 to over 750. They have 2 pairs of legs per segment. .
