  2. 1 Review of Assignment for November Meeting

  3. The Assignment • Our assignment was “Black & White” • Virtually any type of photograph • Landscapes • Water • Portraits • Black, white, and shades of grey • May be tinted (ex.: sepia) The Complete Photographer!

  4. With Black & White… • Black & White photos still need to be composed with care • Lighting is very important • Emphasis on shapes, textures • There’s no color there to distract the viewer • Contrast & smooth tonal variations become more important than ever The Complete Photographer!

  5. Exposure….. • Correct exposure is critical • Beauty of a B&W photo is typically in details • Over or under exposure destroys these details • Use HDRI techniques if scene contrast is too high • Selective focus and depth-of-field control • Since viewer is not distracted by color, he/she will be looking for sharp subjects and fine details The Complete Photographer!

  6. Color…. • It may seem strange to talk about color in B&W photography but, • Two different colors might render the same tonal level (i.e., shade of grey) • This causes a total loss of contrast • Use optical filters or use color filtering in post-processing to correct this The Complete Photographer!

  7. And…. • You might also try selective B&W conversion • To enhance a small subject • Works better when color area is small • To otherwise convey a message • Ex: differentiate between old & new The Complete Photographer!

  8. Examples… The Complete Photographer!

  9. The Complete Photographer!

  10. Those were some Examples • When it comes to Black & White, most so-called rules of photography still apply • Success depends on • Composition • Exposure • Lighting • The photographer’s knowledge of his or her tools and how they interact • Most of all, the outcome depends on the photographer’s creativity The Complete Photographer!

  11. OK, Now… • This concludes the review of the last assignment • Let’s have a look at what’s been submitted for critique! The Complete Photographer!
