  1. Floating roof tank repair Liquid escapes from two leaky places of a floating roof tank. The tank is filled with high flammable kerosine, therefore the use of an absolute spark free repair method is mandatory. The necessary repair of the floating roof has been carried out at an oil group in Rotterdam / Netherlands during a cold period of the year.

  2. Floating roof tank repair A 6 mm thick steel plate was fixed to the roof by using an epoxy putty in the past. Since the flexibility of these roofs is quite big the stiff steel plate was unable to follow the movements. After a few months it started to leak again and it was feared that the plate comes off completely.

  3. Floating roof tank repair Generally adhesives are unsuitable to close cracks and holes. In addition to that the bonding with oily or greasy surfaces is impossible. MM-metal oL-steelceramic(+ Hardener red) has especially been developed for the application on oily, greasy surfaces or surfaces contaminated with fuel (here kerosine) and tested and certified. Therefore it is not necessary to remove any liquid out of the tank before starting the repair. The 2-component-material enables the user to close any cracks or holes immediately. Already after partly curing (appr. 45 min. at 5 °C), the repair area can be cleaned and made grease-free for the application of further material. MM-metal oL-steelceramic(+ Hardener red) Data Sheet

  4. Floating roof tank repair In the next step two or more layers of MM-Elastomer 95, a polyurethane with shore-hardness A 95, is put onto the previously applied MM-metal oL-steelceramic and the surrounding steel area in an overlapping way. This 2-component-material can be applied by brush or spatula; a primer is not necessary. MM-Elastomer 95 Data Sheet

  5. Floating roof tank repair This leakage of a different floating roof was easily identified because the fluid on the tank shows oil-like clouds in the rainwater.

  6. Floating roof tank repair Before the technicians started their work, three repaired leaks have been inspected, which have been coated with MM-metal oL-steelceramic one year ago. They were found to be perfectly ok.

  7. Floating roof tank repair Loose pieces of rust must be removed from the area to be coated while the place is kept as dry as possible at the same time. Therefore a vacuum pump was installed in a distance of appr. 25 m. Then the area is thoroughly roughened up by using abrasive paper.

  8. Floating roof tank repair The repair place and an other leakage was closed with MM-metal oL-steelceramic(+ Hardener red) MM-metal oL-steelceramic(+ Hardener red) Data Sheet

  9. Floating roof tank repair Within the pot life it is checked if the liquid does not penetrate the curing PolymerMetal. Then the repair spot is mask-taped.

  10. Floating roof tank repair MM-Elastomer 95 is applied and in the final step the masking tape is removed.

  11. Floating roof tank repair • Advantages of this repair method • Removal of the medium out of the tank is not necessary • Very quick repair • No use of special tools required • Even possible at very low temperatures up to 5 °C • Tested material MM-metal oL-steelceramic offers technical reliability at application on oily, greasy surfaces or surfaces contaminated with • Compensation of flexible wave movements of the roof because of the strong but flexible material MM-Elastomer Note: After successful repair the concerned oil group recommends the use of this repair technique in their network (intranet). Before using MM-Elastomer it should be checked, if this material is resistant to the tank‘s liquid. If the material can‘t be recommended, alternative methods are possibly available.
