  1. Basic Floral Arrangement Shapes Robbie Buchanan May 2007

  2. Triangular Designs • Three distinct sides and corners, angles or tips • “One-sided designs” (normally viewed only from one side) • Can be symmetrical or asymmetrical • Equilateral, isosceles

  3. Triangular Design Construction • Add three flowers or stems of foliage to create the framework (usually toward the back and angled forward since these are typically one-sided arrangements)

  4. Cone Designs • Typical of Byzantine style • 3-D vertical isosceles triangle • Floral foam wrapped with chicken wire or cut into a cone shape to be used

  5. Cone Design Construction • Secure foam and chicken wire • Add thin moss with green pins • Add fruit, veggies, berries, pine cones if desired with green pins, wire or wood picks • Insert short stemmed flowers

  6. Circular Designs • Can be one-sided (oval, fan) or viewed from all sides (round, oval) • Can be symmetrical or asymmetrical

  7. Circular Designs • Round • Oval • Fan-shaped • What kind of flowers do you use?

  8. Creating Circular Designs • Designed to be viewed from ______ sides • There is no _______ point • All stems should be the same __________ from the center of the design • The space between flowers should be ________ • We use mass, filler and form flowers, but not _______ flowers, UNLESS we are making a ________ type of round arrangement

  9. Line Styles • Crescent • Hogarth Curve

  10. Creating Line Style Arrangments • Select curving stems to form the shape • What can be done to “help” stems curve?

  11. Vertical Design Styles • Used when strong vertical line needs to be emphasized • Usually put in vertical containers • Height emphasized

  12. Creating Vertical Designs • Bud vases • Stylized vertical designs • Select appropriate container • Establish height of arrangement • And primary flowers • Add a component that extends downward • Keep line as you finish • Add mass foliage for focal point

  13. Horizontal Designs • Strong horizontal line • Provides a peaceful, restful feeling • Usually combined with the triangular shape

  14. Creating Horizontal Designs • Select low container • Establish framework • Establish narrow width • Establish height • Add flowers to fill in
