  1. Measurement Introduction to Measuring Time

  2. Measuring Time We measure time using clocks and calendars. Calendars tell us what day each date is on and can help us keep track of how many days have gone by. Clocks help us keep track of the hours, minutes and seconds within 24 hours (1 day). The long hand tells us the minute. The short hand tells us the hour, and skinny, long hand tells us the second.

  3. Measuring Time • Why is it important to keep track of time? • Discuss this with an elbow partner • What are some things you do in your everyday life, where you need to keep track of a certain amount of time? • Discuss this with an elbow partner

  4. Estimating Time • Sometimes we have to be able to estimate the amount of time it will take to do something • Why is this important? • Discuss this with an elbow partner • Think of a time where you had to estimate time • Discuss this with an elbow partner

  5. Measuring Time • When we measure time, it is not just important to be able to tell what time it is, but also to be able to look at a clock and figure out how much time is left in a given situation (for example, if you are out with your friends and your parents have told you to be home by 5:00pm, at 2:30pm you know you have 2 ½ hours left to be with your friends) • Think of an example of a time where you had to figure out how much time you had left to do something and share it with the class

  6. Measurement Units Just like we use units to measure length, weight, and volume, we have specific units that are used to measure time Just a quick review on the units we already know: We know that the base unit metre is used to measure length, the base unit gram is used to measure weight and the base unit litre is used to measure volume Time units are a little different...

  7. Time Units Seconds The smallest unit of time on a clock Minutes There are 60 seconds in one minute. Hours There are 60 minutes in one hour. Days There are 24 hours in one day. Weeks There are 7 days in one week. Months The number of days and weeks in a month is different for each month. Years There are 365 days in one year. Decades There are 10 years in one decade. Centuries There are 100 years or 10 decades in one century. Millennia There are 1000 years, 100 decades, or 10 centuries in one millenium.

  8. Using Time Units Answer the following questions in your math duo-tang Why do you think it is important to have different units to measure time? Why do you think it is important to be able to estimate amounts of time? Why do you think it is important to be able to measure amounts of time? Complete questions #3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 from page 145 in your Math Textbook
