  3. 1o Steps to Drawing Medication into a Syringe

  4. Step #1 • Remove the safety cap from the syringe.

  5. Step #2 • Pull back the plunger on the syringe to the mark equal to the amount of medication you need to draw up.

  6. Step #3 • Insert the syringe needle into the rubber center on the top of the medication bottle.

  7. Step #4 • Turn the bottle upside down.

  8. Step #5 • Pull back the plunger to the mark at the prescribed amount of medication.

  9. Step #6 • Remove the needle from the bottle and inspect the medication in the syringe for air bubbles.

  10. Step #7 • Flick the syringe to move bubbles to the top.

  11. Step #8 • Push the plunger to remove the air bubbles.

  12. Step #9 • Draw more medication if needed.

  13. Step #10 • Give the injection as ordered and recap the needle.

  14. SAFETY TIPS!!! • Pay attention! • No horseplay! • When taking the cap off of the needle face it away from you. • Always put the cap on the needle when not in use. • DO NOT BEND THE NEEDLE!

  15. LET’S PRACTICE!!! • Your dog “Fido” gets a shot of Dexamethazone once a month for inflammation. The medication label has the following recommendations: • 0.5ml for every 5pounds. • Fido weighs 20lbs. • How much medication should Fido receive each shot? • Draw up the correct amount of medication in your syringe. When you have finished raise your hand. 20 divided by 5 = 4, and 4 times 0.5 = 2ml
