  2. Canada • Border region ruled by England • US tried to invade and take over in Revolutionary War and War of 1812 – unsuccessful • Tension with US; England arms native tribes to fight US • Northern US border is disputed – England, America and Russia all claim WA, OR, ID

  3. Mexico • Revolution from Spain begins 1810 • Miguel Hidalgo – freedom fighter • Revolution finally succeeds in 1821 • Mexico is wary as US farmers move to Texas in 1820s-30s – will US invade? • Spain also loses its grip on other territory in N & S America as well…

  4. Spanish Florida • US wants more access to Gulf • US attacks Florida, saying we are recovering runaway slaves • Spain too weak to defend Florida • Adams-Onis Treaty 1819 Spain cedes to US

  5. Latin America Venezuela Colombia • Revolutions continue throughout South and Central America • Simon Bolivar = “the Great Liberator” • By 1825, most of Latin America was independent Brazil

  6. Russia • Have hunting, fishing camps along northern Pacific coast – Canada, Alaska • Claim the Pacific coast as far south as California (Fort Ross)

  7. Monroe Doctrine • Many newly independent countries in N & S America • Most new countries are weak, disorganized • US is concerned European countries will try to re-take control
