  1. The Kawashima’s are innocent WE HAVE PROOF! By: Erika and Charlie, the defense attorneys

  2. Evidence: Physical • Nearly impossible for the Kawashimas to kill the Masuadas (not extremely strong, athletic), start the fire, rush back and pretend to sleep, throw out the belongings, and have Ko accidently injured since the police/firemen arrived as the Kawashimas woke up to notice the fire • None of the Kawashimas DNA matched the skin under Mrs. Masuada’s nails • The cash box that was supposedly stolen was not in the Kawashima’s possession • No weapon similar to the one that killed the Masudas near/belonging to the Kawashima’s, making it unlike Started the fire but didn’t kill the Masuada’s • Firemen could testify that the Kawashima’s were asleep/throwing items out of the house when they arrived, showing that the Kawashima’s were unaware/surprised/frightened by the fire • Hideyo, Ko, and Yoko could vouch that they had no idea what was happening, and that the Masuadas’ were dead until the police informed them • The fire had an igniter, the kerosene, and no kerosene was found in the Kawashima’s warehouse or the person of Ko, Yoko, and Hideyo. They didn’t smell of kerosene, so there wasn’t any way to link them to the igniter and goro washed his feet.

  3. Evidence: Non-Physical • Why would they risk burning down their own shelter? • They aren’t known to cause mischief and have such illegal behavior • Why would they have left their belongings in the house if they knew there was going to be a fire? Why didn’t they have a plan? • Caused Ko to be injured, almost died • Children of a diplomat • Polite, honorable, • Neighbors/friends with the Masuadas. Why would they kill/burn friends? • The Kawashima’s were sleeping when they noticed the fire. Why risk sleeping/suffocating in the fire? Why would they sleep in the first place if they started the fire? • The Kawashimas are very poor, and why risk jail when they have to little already? • What motives do the Kawashima’s have? Not money, since the cash box/money wasn’t found, not revenge since the Masuadas’ gave the Kawashima’s shelter. Plus, other people had better motives, like Goro since he was fired, and Junko for the will money/insurance money/ money • Ko burned a man when she went to the outhouse. Why would she risk being seen if she was going to commit a crime, and if the man was innocent, and why didn’t he come forward to tell that Ko burned him and that she was indeed near the factory? • The street car was going to come soon after the fire/murders. Wouldn’t the Kawashima’s wanted their to be as little activity near the factory as possible when they started the fire?
