  1. Taking that leap … To the cloud Anindya Roy

  2. Agenda • Which Cloud ? • Few vendors and offerings • Why Cloud ? • Few stories from my life • How Cloud ? • Lets build your company KMS for INR55 (Demo)

  3. Which Cloud • Microsoft Azure • Rack Space • Amazon AWS • GCE (Yet to be publicly available) • And a bunch of local players

  4. Which Cloud • Choosing criteria • User Access Region / Latency • Certifications and Credentials • Legal Requirements • Available feature sets • Compatibility with your existing Apps

  5. Which Cloud • Some Quick Demystifications • IaaS, PaaS, SaaS • EC2/Windows Azure • EBS, VHD • S3, Blob Storage • RDS, SQL Azure • Elastic IP

  6. Story 1 – Cloud for Agility Recently a large organization was expanding and building a new division. The projected CapEx for the new setup was somewhere around • Operational Cost 3,00,000 INR • Application Development Cost 15,00,000 INR • Hardware and Infrastructure Cost 25,00,000 INR

  7. Story 1 – Cloud for Agility • But after 6 months, they had to shut this new division due to some business reasons. The decision indeed caused some upfront loses. But, the tech team was able to reduce the infrastructure cost.

  8. Story 1 – Cloud for Agility And the final figures were somewhere around this: • Operational Cost 3,00,000 INR • Application Development Cost 15,00,000 INR • Hardware and Infrastructure Cost 12,500 INR How?

  9. Story 1 – Cloud for Agility And the final figures were somewhere around this: • Operational Cost 3,00,000 INR • Application Development Cost 15,00,000 INR • Hardware and Infrastructure Cost 12,500 INR By Converting CapEx to OpEx

  10. Story 2 – Auto Scaling For Dummies When we say Cloud Scaling, the first thing comes to mind is Auto Scaling an infrastructure on Cloud using APIs. That’s true but might not be the case for everyone. But, before we go ahead.

  11. Story 2 – Auto Scaling For Dummies When we say Cloud Scaling, the first thing comes to mind is Auto Scaling an infrastructure on Cloud using APIs. That’s true but might not be the case for everyone. Lets understand what's Auto Scaling

  12. Story 2 – Auto Scaling For Dummies When we say Cloud Scaling, the first thing comes to mind is Auto Scaling an infrastructure on Cloud using APIs. That’s true but might not be the case for everyone. The Story Continues ….

  13. Story 2 – Auto Scaling For Dummies I recently was consulting for a stock image website. Got them migrated to Cloud for better scalability. But they needed to cut more cost. They were running the site on a single server, so there was no chance of auto scaling. Let me show what I did.

  14. Story 2 – Auto Scaling For Dummies And Here is the Result That’s a straight 13% saving

  15. Story 2 – Auto Scaling For Dummies And Here is the Result The Point Am trying to make is

  16. Story 2 – Auto Scaling For Dummies And Here is the Result Even smaller and test setups can get benefitted by Cloud Scalability

  17. Story 2 – Auto Scaling For Dummies And Here is the Result And save cost

  18. Story 3 – Running on empty • Here is a startup story. For which I am consulting currently.

  19. Story 3 – Running on empty • The Website is completely functional • But we are still doing a restricted beta • So its not open for public yet and the load is negligible Now guess how much we are paying for it today

  20. Story 3 – Running on empty • The Website is completely functional • But we are still doing a restricted beta • So its not open for public yet and the load is negligible Approx. INR 0/- per month

  21. Story 3 – Running on empty • The Website is completely functional • But we are still doing a restricted beta • So its not open for public yet and the load is negligible And the same setup can be scaled to handle 10,000 users with a single reboot.

  22. Lets build your company KMS • Ok, so enough of stories. • Now lets build a knowledge management system for your company on Cloud PS: This could be any live website

  23. Lets build your company blog • DEMO

  24. Few Concerns • Nothing in this world comes without a few lines of fine print. And here are some basic fine lines which you should look out for most of the cloud providers. • Who in Gods name runs a datacenter on his Credit Card? • Compute resources (IOP…) are not free • Neither is backup • Make sure your vendor has the right security accreditations and certifications • Security is your responsibility
