5. Antagonist • Sheila: • Is a six year old whose 14 yr old mother dumped her out of the car onto the side of a freeway when she was 4 yrs. old • Her father whips her • Her uncle sexual abuses her • She is smarter than any average student her age

8. Plot Summary • Rising Action: The School’s principal informs Torey that she is receiving a new student • Exposition: Torey is a teacher of severly disturbed children. Sheila is her new student who is violent and doesn’t talk • Climax: Sheila is sexual abused by her uncle. She has to have surgery. Also she is to be sent to the State Hospital. • Resolution: Sheila doesn’t get sent to the State Hospital. She stays in Torey’s class. Next year she will skip to the third grade

Themes • Resource rooms: classrooms where students who needs some special instruction in a small group setting for a portion or all of the day can go. • Mental Disorder: a psychological disorder of thought or emotion • Child Abuse: is a very complex and dangerous set of problems that include child neglect and the physical, emotional, and sexual abuse of children

10. Rating 10 In this book, Torey describes her experiences with little Sheila in a way that tugs at your emotions. She makes you long to be there and help. This book is very well written and it helps those who read it learn how terrible abuse really is. It makes them realize how fragile children are but how resilient they can be when actually helped.

14. Physical Abuse • Physical Abuse: When a person actually causing physical bodily harm to the child. • Examples: burning, kicking, hitting, shaking, beating, pushing, whipping, etc

Emotional Abuse • Emotional Abuse: harsh and cruel criticisms or threats to the child that then creates emotional problems such as the child feeling worthless. • Examples: Calling names and making negative comparisons to others Telling a child he or she is “no good," "worthless," "bad," or "a mistake.”

16. Sexual Abuse • Sexual Abuse: is when a caregiver of the child is having sexual relations with the child • Sexual abuse includes: intercourse, rape, fondling, incest, and sodomy

17. Neglect • Physical Neglect: not providing the child with an adequate amount of food, clothes, medical care, protection, or warmth during cold and vise versa for heat. • Emotional Neglect: not giving the child enough attention, love, respect, support, and communication • Educational Neglect: not enrolling your child in school, not getting them help with special needs education if needed, and allowing them to miss an excessive amount of days of school.

18. Warning Signs • Emotional abuse: • Excessively withdrawn, fearful, or anxious about doing something wrong. • Acts either inappropriately adult (taking care of other children) or inappropriately infantile (rocking, thumb-sucking, tantruming).

19. Warning Signs • Physical abuse: • Frequent injuries or unexplained bruises, welts, or cuts. • Shies away from touch, flinches at sudden movements, or seems afraid to go home

20. Warning Signs • Sexual abuse: • Trouble walking or sitting. • Knows to much or interest in sexual acts inappropriate to his or her age, or even seductive behavior • Doesn’t want to participate in physical activities/sports • An STD or pregnancy, especially under the age of 14

21. Warning Signs • Neglect: • Clothes are ill-fitting, filthy, or inappropriate for the weather. • Hygiene is consistently bad • Untreated medical conditions • Allowed to play in unsafe situations and environments • Misses a lot of school
