  2. Required Software • SSH client (required) • PuTTY (FREE)(download putty.exe and plink.exe) • SSH Communications Security • X server (optional, but needed for GUI) • Xming (FREE)(download Xming in “Public Domain Releases”) • XWin

  3. Methods to Login • SSH shell (with or without X server) • X server is necessary for GUI • X server thru SSH • a terminal or • an XDMCP session(Desktop environment)

  4. Available Servers • linux[n].se.cuhk.edu.hk • linux[n] can be linux03, linux04, linux05 • If you really need to look for more servers, check the option “Use indirect connect” • Inside SE intranet, you may omit “.se.cuhk.edu.hk” part

  5. Method 1: SSH shell (PuTTY) • run putty.exe • [Connection]-[SSH]-[X11]: • Enable X11 forwarding • [Session]: • Host Name: (e.g.) cuse81 • Save for later use • Double click the saved session name to start SSH • you will get:

Method 2: X server (Xming) • run XLaunch.exe • choose “Multiple windows” (choose XDMCP for a remote) then click Next • choose “Start a program” then click Next • choose “Using PuTTY” • type in server(host) name in “Connect to computer” • type in UNIX username in “login as user” • type in UNIX password in “password” • click Next: you may need to locate plink.exe • click Next • click “Save configuration” for later use (optional) • click Finish • you will get something like:
