  2. Robert Louis Stevenson • Born on 13 November 1850 in Edinburg • His father Thomas Stevenson was a lighthouse engineer • His mother Margaret was daughter of Lewis Balfour • Robert inherited weak chest from his mother

  3. In 1876 Robert met Fanny Vandergrift Osbourn • Fanny had 3 children • In 1877 they became lovers • In 1880 Robert married Fanny

  4. He studied engineering and law at the University of Edinburg • Stevenson's first published a book when he was only sixteen • In his works he critizes the narromindedness of middle-class • His travels gave him inspiration and material for works • He considered art superior to life

  5. Works • Novels: „Treasure Island“ „Kidnapped“ „The Black Arrow“ „Prince Otto“ „Strange case of Dr Jekyll an Mr Hyde“ „Catriona“ • Poems: „A Child's Garden of Verses“ „Underwoods“ „Song of Travel and Other Verses“ • He also wrote short stories, essays and travel writings

  6. Health • He had a very bad health and had to stay in warmer climate • He might have had tuberculosis or bronchiectasis • In 1894 he collapsed and died of a cerebral haemorrage

  7. Treasure Island • His first adventure novel • Originally it was serialized in magazine called Young Folks • The book was publised in 1883 • It tells a story of pirates and buried gold • It is considered as a Bildungsroman (novel of education)
